James Halliday 5 Star Winery (2016 vintage)
Our Cellar - "Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz blends and vice versa, are often referred to as the great Australian blend. Great red fruit characters from the Cabernet and fine tannins from the Shiraz providing good mouthfeel and palate length. A style all about fruit, some oak background but soft tannins and an easy drinkability."
The Winemaker "Aromas of red cherry, spice and sweet oak. Mid-weight palate with some Cabernet Sauvignon cedar up front that leads to soft Shiraz richness. The oak regime is mainly older American and French so limited impact although some vanillin on both nose and palate with a long sweet finish. Excellent fruit flavours and balance being the features that will be maintained under the screw cap packaging"
Brokenwood was founded in 1970 by three Sydney based solicitors, including James Halliday - who would become Australia's leading wine critic - as a weekend indulgence of their shared passion for wine. It was put on a more professional footing from the early 1980s with the appointment of Iain Riggs as Chief Winemaker & Managing Director, following a growth in the number of partners involved and the vineyard area from the original 10-acre plot which had been destined to be the local cricket pitch.
