Brokenwood Wade Block 2 Vineyard Shiraz 2013 ~ McLaren Vale, South Australia
95/100 - James Halliday Australian Wine Companion
2016 Trophy - McLaren Vale Wine Show 2014
James Halliday "It's a strange day when a wine with this intensity of flavour and structure says drink me before my Hunter Valley brethren, although it's a tight call. Savoury, earthy blackberry fruit has a substrate of licorice and 70% cacao chocolate."
The Winemaker "Great colour with bright purple tints and deep density. Lifted Christmas cake aromas enhanced with background oak. Medium weight palate with spice and dark fruit flavours. Lovely ripe balanced tannins. Tell-tale pastille black jube fruit characters with a long finish. A big future ahead for this wine."
The thirteenth bottling of the Wade Block 2 from McLaren Flat. Grown in deep sand, this is an amazing vineyard in that it is nearing 20 years old, but planted with cuttings sourced from a very old local vineyard and grown on own roots. Again, very distinctive and complex, and more than qualifies for the ‘Single Vineyard’ label. With McLaren Vale being true Mediterranean/maritime in climate, no surprises that the region was rain free from December 2012 onwards. The summer was officially recognised as the hottest in Australia since records began. As such, no disease pressure and a very short harvest period with the bulk of fruit picked by early March. Brokenwood's decision to pick a bit earlier has paid off with this wine having vibrant sweet fruit and balance.
Established in 1970 Brokenwood Wines is one of Australia's most reputable premium wine labels and a must-visit in the Hunter Valley. It was established by Australia's leading wine critic, James Halliday. Consistently listed as a 5 star winery, Brokenwood is home to the famous Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, the highly acclaimed ILR Reserve Semillon, and the popular Cricket Pitch Range.
