'Best Value Winery' ~ James Halliday
James Halliday 5 Red Star Winery

James Halliday "...The palate has a juicy, almost sherbet-like, intensity... it also has a startling precision and length, fruit, rather than artefact, paramount....Cool/dry conditions resulted in low crops with small bunches, night-harvested, gently destemmed, cool-fermented with wild yeast. "

James Halliday "The range and quality of his wines are extraordinary, the prices irresistible." (2013 vintage)

Larry Cherubino has had a distinguished winemaking career, first at Hardys Tintara, then Houghton, and thereafter as consultant/Flying Winemaker in Australia, NZ, South Africa, the US and Italy. All the wines Cherubino produces are single region wines. The runaway success of the business has seen the accumulation of 120ha of vineyards, the appointment of additional winemakers, and Larry's own appointment as Director of Winemaking for Robert Oatley Vineyards.

Light yellow hue, fresh and clean; the bouquet is cashew-nutty, creamy and lightly smoky … becoming cleaner and more spicy with air. It's very fresh and vibrant with intense lemon juice flavour...."

James Halliday “A different expression of funk that backs off somewhat having made its point, and moves into elegant mode. Nice wine.”

Mike Bennie, WBM Magazine Jan/Feb 2020 "A super Chardonnay at the Apex of Australia's growing list of high quality proponents, this is a tour de force of precise fruit character, savoury detail, minerally charm and general interest as an expression of Chardonnay. Succulent, exceptionally long, nutty notes in just-ripe nectarine with chalk-talc and saline character notes through. Outstanding."

James Halliday Wine Companion 2020 "Dry-grown on riverine black basalt soil with a maritime influence. Wild ferment in barriques, approx. 25% new. Ripe and peachy on the bouquet with some nutty oak characters and lees-derived creaminess. Generous flavours and full in texture, harnessed by the acidity that runs full length on the palate and lingers in the aftertaste."

Nick Stock/James Suckling Margaret River Review 2020 "Attractive lemon and gunflint aromas with some restrained creaminess in the background. The palate has a beautifully smooth-honed feel with supple, citrusy fruit fitting in neatly. The acidity is a highlight, pitched just right. Drink now."

1 x Yabby Lake Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2019 - Victoria, Australia

93/100 The Wine Front
92/100 Halliday Wine Companion
90/100 The Real Review

James Halliday 5 Star Winery

The Wine Front "Very Nice Chardonnay....Refreshing for sure. Good detail.... It does struck match and flint, it does citrus and green apple, some spicy oak there, it does a slightly rubbery tightness and a milky haze in texture through glass shard cuts. It’s a wine that feels primped and preened into its style of racy, leaner, taut, rather than reflecting inherent fruit character, but in that way hits its markers and will delight an audience of appreciative drinkers...."

Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion "No single-block wines this vintage, with all fruit allocated to the single-vineyard wines across the range. This has morphed into a more savoury wine with almost a complete absence of fruit flavours, except for a flutter of citrus. It has the sulphide stamp, the restraint yet even tighter with acidity leading. A hint of beeswax, just the finest creamy leesy flavour....don't chill it down too much."

Yabby Lake Vineyard was established by the Kirby family in 1998 and over the past decade, Yabby Lake has built a reputation for single-vineyard Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of great purity and character.

Bronze - Langton's Margaret River Wine Show 2019

5 Star Winery - James Halliday

James Halliday 'Reflects the Southern Margaret River, bright and almost savoury juiciness, zesty phenolic grip to the finish.'

Mike Bennie - Winefront "...Expressive and interesting and great drinking....Quite funky, broad, nutty, savoury notes, really interesting, Jersey caramels and grilled nuts, fino, green apple too. SO much going on. Quieter in the palate with green apple, toast, nuttiness and more salty characters and a touch of Jersey caramel to finish but there’s great freshness too. Really like this character-filled wine."
