Chateau Beyran is one of our favourites. We started with their Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec 2011 blend, a couple of years ago and have watched as it continued to grow, get better and increase in intensity and concentration. Now a constant reference point for Bordeaux on the shelves, it is a rewarding wine that proudly and justifiably wears its 2011 gold medal on the front label.
Bordeaux is one of the world's most prolific wine regions, it is also one of the the most famous and prestigious.
Bordeaux's climate is well moderated by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the presence of the various rivers (the Dordogne, the Garonne and the Gironde Estuary into which they flow). The region takes its name (which translates roughly as "next to the waters") from the port city of Bordeaux, which serves as its logistical and administrative center.
Eighty-nine per cent of wine produced in Bordeaux is red, and made by more than 8,500 producers (which are also known as châteaux).
As a very broad generalization, Cabernet Sauvignon (Bordeaux's second-most planted grape variety) dominates the blend in red wines produced in the Médoc and the rest of the left bank of the Gironde estuary. Typical top-quality Châteaux blends are 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot. This is typically referred to as the "Bordeaux Blend." Merlot tends to predominate in Saint-Émilion, Pomerol and the other right bank appellations. These Right Bank blends from top-quality Châteaux are typically 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.
