Australia's Top 52 Wineries of 2020 - N#28 - Sydney Morning Herald

A wine only released in exceptional vintages

Sunday Telegraph “For long one of the Yarra Valley's [Australia] signature chardonnays, the style continues to be tweaked by winemaker Clare Halloran to ensure its continued rousing mouthfeel, freshness and subtle marriage of oak. Very much a fruit-driven explosion of chardonnay's finest attributes, all moulded with great balance and care.”

Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion “A racy, fresh and drink-now style that's lightly spiced, citrussy with some complexing sulphides and creamy lees. Lithe and long with a fine line of natural acidity. A good drink.”

Wine Companion "There's really fine, tangy acidity throughout and nothing is out of place....an amalgam of flavours, but is more citrus-toned and spiced with ginger."

Huan Hooke, The Real Review "Light to very light straw colour, looks and smells backward. Shaved almond and floral nuances."

International Wine Challenge “Attractive struck match nose with an easy-drinking creamy stone fruit palate.”

The Winemaker “The wine has grapefruit and lemon zest aromas with underlying notes of cashew nuts. The tight palate reflects the season, with texture derived from 10 months on lees and a lovely drive with the persistence of flavour. With oak and tank maturation, the wine shows an elegant complexity with appealing freshness.”

TarraWarra Estate has some of the Yarra Valley's oldest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, and is considered one of the region's foremost wineries. Located in one of Australia's best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir growing regions, Tarrawarra Estate is estate is rated by top Australian wine critic, James Halliday as “one of the top-tier wineries in the Yarra Valley”. It is best known for its exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Conde Naste Traveller "Make a stop here to taste the best of the region. The cellar door sits on a thousand acres of prime Yarra Valley farmland and vineyards. There are 28 blocks planted with cool-climate grapes, including chardonnay and pinot noir—this region’s stars—as well as shiraz, merlot, and more."

In addition to the beautiful TarraWarra Estate in the Yarra Valley, owners Marc Besen and wife Eva Besen are the custodians of the most significant privately held collection of modern Australian art in the country, now exhibited for much of the year at the TarraWarra Museum of Art.

The Yarra Valley is a well-respected Australian wine region which occupies the eastern half of the Port Phillip viticultural zone in the diminutive state of Victoria. 5 Stars Winery - James Halliday

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit "Attractively fruited and elegantly expressed with Gala apple, fig, lemon peel and almond notes, it's gently weighted and beautifully flowing in the mouth displaying excellent fruit purity with a creamy texture and bright acidity. Beautifully composed and harmonious. At its best: now to 2026."

Gabrielle Poy, The Real Review "Spiced nectarine and herbal highlights lead into a brightly fruited and fleshy core. It's tightly wound and tense in its youth, but still provides plenty of enjoyment. Time will add layers and breadth. A lovely style that balances fruit and savoury nuances very well. "

James Suckling "This has aromas of white peaches, lemons, fresh pears and salted butter. Creamy and fresh with bright acidity. Pretty pastry and white chocolate hints at the end."

James Suckling "Apricot stones, golden apples, cloves and roasted cashews on the nose. Full-bodied with fresh acidity and a rich, buttery texture. Vanilla and praline to close. " (2020 vintage)

Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Bright, light yellow colour, with a note of pineapple introducing the bouquet, followed by grapefruit and lemon, the palate round and soft, clean and dry, with appealing flavours and medium-long persistence." (2020 vintage)

Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion "Salted pineapple, guava, curry leaf and red apples. This is worked and savoury, with a line of taut, briny acidity that courses through the heart of it. Quite golden in colour in the glass, which is reflected in the concentration and density of flavour in the mouth." (2020 vintage)

James Suckling "This has a spiced-pear nose with a wealth of fleshy fruit on the palate and a gently chalky, pastry finish. The acidity is bright and there’s a lot of peach flavor here." (2019 vintage)

James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion "Here grapefruit juice and zest light the way." (2019 vintage)

Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Medium yellow colour, seems rather advanced. Voluminous peach-nectar aroma, a plain wine, the palate likewise ripe and rounded, full and almost fat, with one-dimensional bold fruit. Sunshine in a bottle. " (2019 vintage)

Western Australian winery, Plantagenet is acclaimed internationally for its consistently highly-awarded, quality wines produced from its five vineyards located in the cool climate region of the Great Southern. It is known for its highly aromatic riesling, tangy citrus-tinged chardonnay, exceptional Rhône-style shiraz and suberb cabernet sauvignon. The five estate vineyards are overseen by Chief Viticulturist Jordan Ellis whose philosophy is sustainability and remaining true to the terroir of the region.

The Real Review "Plantagenet is a pioneer of the Great Southern region of Western Australia with vineyards first planted in 1986 and the first commercial winery established in the region. Celebrated for its rich heritage, the winery is owned the Lionel Samson family, the oldest family owned business in Western Australia established in Fremantle in 1829. Plantaganet has five vineyards in the Mount Barker sub region each with the unique characteristics, ancient soils and a cool maritime climate cretaing expressive wines of provenance, quality & prestige. "

James Halliday, Halliday Australian Wine Companion "Plantagenet has honed its flagship varieties into a distinct Great Southern wine style; a depth of lively flavour, seamless elegance and natural purity"

The Great Southern is emerging as a wine region of international significance and reputation. It is the largest wine growing region in Australia and is the second largest producer of grapes in Western Australia. It is a landscape of forested cliffs and resplendent mountain ranges, grazing pastures and towns steeped in history. The regional climate ranges from the coastal, maritime subregions of Albany and Denmark to the inland, continental subregions of Mount Barker, Porongurup and Frankland River. The predominant soils are similar to those of the Margaret River region - either lateritic gravelly sandy loams (marri country) or sandy loams deriving directly from granite and gneissic bedrocks. Near perfect conditions for grape growing has lured some of the most creative and talented winemakers to call this land their home and become part of its ancient story.

The region is known for commitment to be sustainable, and organic, and is attracting some of Australia’s best winemakers. In 2023 the region dominated the Halliday Wine Companion Awards with its Top Rated 2023 Rieslings winning 10 of the top 40 awards. Other varietals from the region also received exceptional ratings of 97, 96 & 95 points.

‘SMALL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR’ ~ The West Australian Wine Guide 2010
‘SMALL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR’ ~ The West Australian Wine , Guide 2009

Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion "Hand picked, whole-bunch pressed, fermented in a combination of seasoned and new French oak. Toasty, chewy and packed with layers of flavour and texture. The saline acid ties it all to a post, the concentrated fruit forms a deep pool of flavour on the tongue. There's a lot to ponder, a lot to like, and thankfully, a whole bottle to drink. Get to it."

Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Very light-straw colour. The aroma is reserved and a bit shy, with a faint floral overtone, while the palate is light but reasonably intense, straightforward and tickled up with a trace of sweetness. A pleasant wine."

James Halliday Wine Companion "Hand-picked, chilled, whole-bunch pressed, fermented in new and 1yo French barriques. This has good mouthfeel and varietal expression, the oak surprisingly well behaved. It is still youthful, with room to grow and prosper." (2018 vintage)

Steven Creber, Halliday Wine Companion "Opens with plenty of winemaking 'funk' on the bouquet (struck match, cashew, toast), but there's a core of quality grapefruit, melon and peach varietal character as well. Generous in flavour, combining all those elements found in the bouquet, it has an attractive viscosity of mouthfeel with fresh acidity keeping things taut and controlled on the palate. Well made." (2017 vintage)

Nick Buttler, The Real Review "Grapefruits and charry oak - vanilla custard rounds out the bouquet. A lovely, creamy palate - lees work is evident, partial MLF (malolactic fermentation) wouldn't surprise - artifice done well. A generous wine that retains poise, complex enough, the grapefruit acid line leaves a hint of bitterness that demands the next sip." (2017 vintage)

Ned Goodwin MW, Halliday Wine Companion "A wine that glimpses the current zeitgeist of mineral-clad, tauter expressions of chardonnay, while also paying heed to the proclivity of Margaret River for generosity and texture. Honeydew melon and quince leap out of the blocks, while a juicy kernel of cashew, brulee and nougat set the pace for stone fruit notes and a generous lick of medium toasted French oak, toning the palate." (2016 vintage)

The Western Australian Wine Guide 2018 "Brown Hill Estate is small family-run southern Margaret River producer has gone from strength to strength with a range of exceptional quality and value-for-money wines. The vines are all dry grown and on quite harsh gravelly soils, resulting in small yields. All grapes are hand-picked. The reds are put into a high percentage of new American and French oak. Great value and super wines."

Brown Hill Estate is a family run, multi-award winning Margaret River winery focussed on single vineyards. It utilizes traditional methods of handpicking and hand sorting to get the best quality from its grapes, and French coopered barrels in production.

Margaret River is one of the best-known wine regions in Australia, recognized internationally for the quality of its wines and the natural beauty of the region. Although originally renowned for its unusually refined Cabernet Sauvignon and intensely citrusy chardonnay varieties, the region now produces Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends and Shiraz.

Located in the south-western corner of Western Australia, it is famous for having a more 'European' wine style than its counterparts across Australia, owing to the regions temperate, coastal location which is very similar to that of Bordeaux.

Ranked #4 of New Zealand Chardonnays - Wine 360
5 Star Rated by Bob Campbell

Cam Douglas MS "A full-bodied, nutty, rich and powerful wine with a core of roasted stone fruit and toasty cashew-nut oak flavours, fine textured tannins and a brazil-nut butter texture. Baked peaches and lemon, nectarine skin and grapefruit. There’s vanilla and nut, warming alcohol and medium+ acidity. A wine that ticks all the boxes of weight and intensity, richness and power, flavour and deliciousness. "

The Real Review, Bob Campbell "Big, rich and creamy chardonnay with layers of tree fruit, citrus fruit, mineral and oak flavours. Complex, satisfying and generously proportioned, with a solid backbone of tangy acid and peppery tannins. An heroic chardonnay with development potential."

James Suckling "A crisp and very lively chardonnay with sliced lemon, green apple and a hint of nougat. Medium-bodied with excellent energy and a minerally finish. Salty."

The Real Review, Stephen Wong "Tight, flinty sulfide/smoke nose, young, closed. Very high-toned citrus and herb notes - in the reductive, mineral style. Concentrated fruit, sulfites dominating at present, will this integrate over time? Very modern style, quite lean. Just lacking the fruit weight and depth to stand up the level of reduction here; still very good, but shy of great"

The Real Review, Bob Campbell "Light, slightly phenolic (in a good way) with grapefruit, sizzled butter, and oyster shell flavours. A bit simple at first but opened up as it sat in the glass."

The Real Review, Bob Campbell "Rich, complex chardonnay with grapefruit, nectarine, green apple, mint and a saline-mineral character.A lively, high-energy wine that promises to age very well indeed." (2019 vintage)

Cam Douglas MS "A rich and captivating bouquet with aromas of vanilla and roasted peach, baked apple and cashew nut, sour cream and burnt butter, nectarine and baking spice. There's no mistaking the power, the oak and the variety. Full-bodied and creamy textured on the palate with stone fruit and grapefruit flavours, vanilla and rw sugar with baking spice and smoke flavours of oak, fine tannins and mediumacidity. This is a big wine, but very well made, quite serious , rich, bold, nutty and ready." (2019 vintage)

Bob Campbell "Rich, weighty, creamy-textured chardonnay with toast, sizzled butter, peach, melon, spice and citrus flavours (among others). A satisfyingly complex and textural wine that demonstrate impressive viticultural and winemaking skills" (2018 vintage)

James Suckling "Sweetly floral and offering a wealth of fresh melon and peaches with orange blossom, too. The palate has a rich, fleshy and quite succulent feel with plenty of flavor, following the peach and lemon vein. Grilled nuts to close." (2018 vintage)

Cam Douglas "There’s no mistaking the power and impact from this wine with aromas of cashew nut and whipped cream, roasted peaches and vanilla, smoky wood and brown baking spices. On the palate - full-bodied with a creamy texture, fruity reflecting the aromas from the bouquet. With the presented level of bottle-development, this wine is ready to enjoy from today and through 2021." (2018 vintage)

Jancis Robinson "...this is proper premier cru stuff, with all the sophistication and minerality (whatever that might be!) of great Chardonnay." (2018 vintage)

The Winemaker "The palate is concentrated with waves of harmonious flavours of ripe citrus, flinty lees characters and nutty, toasty flavours. The acidity is well-matched with the weight and concentration of the wine, rich enough not to be distracted by any malo or heavy lees work."

Raymond Chan "The nose is softly full and voluminous with generous and up-front aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits along with nuances of citrus and tropical fruit melded with well-packed complexing aromas of gunflint reduction, creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak. This has depth and power. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and mouth-filling flavours of ripe yellow stonefruits with hints of citrus and tropical fruit, integrated with a fine, complex amalgam of nutty oak and flinty reduction. There is a suggestion of richness and creaminess from the barrel-ferment, which is balanced by bright, refreshing acidity. The wine carries with power and drives along a fine-textured line, leading to a long and sustained finish. This is a rich, mouth-filling and concentrated, complex Chardonnay with stonefruit, nutty oak and gunflint interest on a powerful palate. Match with poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 5-6+ years. A selection of the finest barrels. Fruit from the volcanic hillsides WBP, and fruit from the sheltered hillsides foot-stomped, then fully indigenous yeast barrel-fermented with full solids to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 36% new French oak puncheons.." (2017 vintage)

Robert Parker The Wine Advocate "Man O’ War is without a doubt one of New Zealand’s greatest wineries in the making and one to watch."

Jancis Robinson “Waiheke Island, home to one of the country’s best Syrah producers Man O’ War…New Zealand is second only to the Rhône in the consistency of quality it achieves.”

Raymond Chan "Man O’ War is arguably Waiheke Island’s most significant wine producer.."

Man O'War Vineyards is a leading New Zealand wine producer on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf. It is known for its consistently high-quality range of wines made from grape varieties like Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each small parcel of vines is carefully tended and harvested by hand, then vinified separately, fusing classic Old World techniques with innovative New World ideas.

This hilly island is home to a healthy population of hippies and artists, as well as some of Auckland's most famous vineyards. 91/100 Julie Sheppard
91/100 Amy Wilslocki
90/100 Huon Hooke

Bob Campbell "New entry-level chardonnay label from three vineyards in the Upper Moutere. Bright, tangy chardonnay with lemon tart, oyster-shell, nectarine, root ginger and spicy oak flavours. Accessible now but no rush."

James Suckling "Aromas of apple pie and some smoke and mineral undertones follow through to a medium to full body with a phenolic-framed mid-palate and a fresh, vivid finish. A little shy, but lots going on here. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

Julie Sheppard "A newcomer to Neudorf's portfolio, made with grapes sourced from three sites in the Moutere Hills and wild-fermented in barrel. Aromas of waxy citrus, with breezy freshness. The textured, silky palate combines flinty mineral notes with citrus, apple and a touch of peach, alongside vibrant acidity. A good match for creamy fish dishes."

Amy Wilslocki "It has a lovely wild ferment character, with silky, creamy peach and apple fruit. It's textural, fresh and balanced, and will be a hit with lovers of both Old and New World Chardonnay...One of the Society's 2022 Wine Champions, this delicious, Burgundian-style Chardonnay is made by Neudorf, a top name in the Nelson region, from three sites. This has seen whole-bunch fermentation, and 10 months ageing on lees in medium-toast French oak (13% new)"

Huon Hooke "Light to mid-straw-yellow colour, with a smoky, fusty, dried flower, pot-pourri bouquet and a sulfury waft. In the mouth, it’s rich and has a slight tickle of sweetness, with amplitude and generosity, very good drinkability and plenty of appeal"

The Winemaker "A new addition to the Neudorf portfolio.

Organic wines are made from grapes grown without pesticides, following strict organic standards. Organic wines are produced in vineyards that do not use synthetic chemicals. Certified organic wines have been certified by BioGro 5438 certification in New Zealand.

The inaugural Tiritiri Chardonnay comes from three sites within the Moutere Hills, including the young vines of Neudorf’s own Rosie’s Block.

Drinking this wine suggests to me what it might be like to surf those waves off Raglan.

On the nose - ocean sea spray, waxy native florals entwined with white peaches.

These flavours are brought though to the palate along with notes of fennel & yuzu pith. The wine flirts with an exquisite balance of minerality & precision. There is a refreshing surge of acidity that is held together brilliantly with a framework of oak & fruit concentration - all riding the wave in sync.

A Chardonnay to be gently chilled, generously shared & enjoyed with anything that takes you back to the seaside in summer, maybe for a surf, a cast, or a wander."

Neudorf Vineyards is arguably the most well-known producer in New Zealand's famous Nelson wine-growing region. Neudorf was founded in 1978 by Tim and Judy Finn, who experimented with what was then unknown wine territory, building a thriving winery that is now famous for its wines made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. The Finns were pioneers of organic farming in New Zealand and their wine-making philosophy is one of minimal intervention.

Tiritiri is a new brand from Neudorf which collaborates with named, hand-selected growers in the Nelson region to make excellent wines. All wines are created from single-vineyard which are committed to low cropping.

Nelson is a small, wine region at the northern end of New Zealand's South Island. Surrounded on three sides by mountains, it enjoys a unique mesoclimate that is perfect for aromatic grape varieties. Wines made from Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer are considered to be some of the best in New Zealand.

Ray Jordan "A most textural and generous wine but one held with close attention from a crisp acidity and edgy lemony grapefruit control. The palate is deeply complex with a nutty creaminess but then the nectarine and citrus notes lift. Went through malo and then had some lees stirring which have clearly contributed to its appealing mouth feel. The finish is almost refreshing. A very nice wine. (2021 vintage)

Cameron Douglas MS "A youthful and delightful bouquet of fresh white fleshed orchard fruits with apple and white peach then gentle baking spices from barrel and a light baked nut and gun-flint quality. A silky texture touches the palate first then a medium+ to full-bodied weight and core fruit flavours immerse the palate in style. Contrasting acidity, flavours of nutty barrel spices, stone fruits, gun-flint and citrus then gently warming alcohol lead to a lengthy and quite frankly, delicious finish. (2021 vintage)

Bob Campbell, The Real Review "A fruit-forward chardonnay with white peach, apricot, ginger, nutty yeast lees and spicy oak flavours. Quite lush but with a fine tannic backbone that prevents any sense of cloying. Accessible and inviting." (2021 vintage)

James Suckling "This has toasted bread, cashew and biscuit notes alongside poached pears, passion fruits and lemons. Creamy and round with a medium to full body and fresh finish. " (2021 vintage)

Micheal Cooper "The 2021 vintage is a distinctly cool-climate style, hand-picked at Bannockburn and Pisa, and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak puncheons (20 per cent new). Bright yellow/green, with a strong, fresh, citrusy bouquet, it is full-bodied and youthful, with rich, citrusy, slightly appley flavours, gently seasoned with oak, lively acidity and a dry, finely poised finish.

Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Intense and textural chardonnay with toast, grapefruit-citrus, ginger, oyster shell, roasted nut and spicy oak flavours. Smooth-textured wine with good weight and mouth-feel. A very stylish wine that promises to age well." (2019 vintage)

New Zealand Wine Rater "Very much a clean, primary, new-world style bouq uet with tangy, tropical fruit, and bubble-gum aromas with a hint of cinnamon spice, and toasty oak. Quite potent, tasty, and concentrated with plenty of flavour, and vibrant lemon acidity but a little short, and one dimensional at the moment." (2019 vintage)

James Suckling "This has peach and pear aromas with some lemon, nougat and a hint of tropical fruit. The palate has melon and tropical-fruit flavors, as well as some more savory nougat" (2019 vintage)

Highly awarded and acclaimed, wine-maker Alan Peters-Oswald is a specialist premium pinot noir maker. The Central Otago wine region is the world's southern-most commercial wine-growing region, and famous for its Pinot Noir. It differs from all other New Zealand wine areas in that it is inland, in the foothills of the Southern Alps. The level of sunlight is very high, something that accounts for the high levels of alcohol that are often found in Central Otago wines.

Nestled within a timeless and sensual landscape, Nanny Goat Estate Vineyard sits between 270m and 290m above sea level spread across two ancient, North East facing terraces. This is a region of climatic extremes with typically very hot summers, short autumns and bitterly cold winter days. Challenging conditions for producing world-class cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Successive periods of glaciation and recession, followed by erosion by Mata Au / Clutha River have shaped the Nanny Goat Estate landscape by creating distinct terraces of alluvial soils that are pastiche of loess, gravel, schist and mineral quartz. Generations of farming and the associated cultivation of lucerne and other feed crops have added organic matter to the wind blowen loessial topsoil providing us with a nice balance between vine vigor and free draining attributes.

Jancis Robinson “Waiheke Island, home to one of the country’s best Syrah producers Man O’ War…New Zealand is second only to the Rhône in the consistency of quality it achieves.”
