James Suckling "A majestic wine that has savory, earthy, terra-cotta aromas with spiced dark berries, sweet-woody notes, mushrooms and poached blood plums. The palate has a rich and attractive feel with fresh, ripe and plush flavors that carry a wealth of rich dark and ripe berries and a vibrant hold on the finish. A blend of cabernet franc, petit Verdot, merlot, malbec and cabernet sauvignon."
Chris Plazzer "One of New Zealand's best Bordeaux blends. An abundance of red and blackberry fruit with oriental spices and classic earthy notes. On the palate, the wine is generous with a soft texture and fine integrated tannins. Traditionally released with 3 years of bottle age the Ironclad 2015 will develop wonderful nuances with secondary characters of rubbed meat, soy and forest floor developing over time."
Janis Robinson "Cabernet Franc, Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties. Bit of green Cabernet Franc character with juicy blackcurrant fruit and a touch of pencil lead and leather. Plenty of tannic grips. Serious, heavy, quite warm."
The Winemaker "This wine is built with the Merlot component providing the fruit softness and lifted berry fruit aromas, the Cabernet Franc adding fragrant earthy notes and a sinewy structure. Malbec brings ripe tannins and intense floral aromas while the Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon add density and tannin weight to the wine. The blend draws all the elements of the five varieties together resulting in a complex aroma profile of cassis and red summer berries, earthy undertones with a touch of floral fragrance, tarmac and leather all framed within a mix of predominantly French oak and a small component of American oak."
The Real Review, Bob Campbell "A flavoursome blend of cabernet franc, merlot, petit Verdot, cabernet sauvignon and malbec from an excellent vintage. Rich, mellow red with emerging bottle age adding extra interest to a medley of ripe berry fruits, mixed spice and a suggestion of floral character. A satisfyingly complex wine that promises to age well." (2014 vintage)
Raymond Chan "Full, even, near impenetrable black-hued red with slight purple hues, youthful in appearance. The nose is full with vibrantly fresh aromas of black and redcurrants along with a layering of cassis and fresh and dark herbs, a little liquorice and pencilly oak, all harmoniously interwoven and integrated. This has a beautiful clarity of expression and unveils soft, savoury complexities with aeration. Full-bodied, the palate has beautifully ripe and rich, succulently sweet flavours of blackberries with black plums, cassis, dark herbs with some liquorice and spice, with pencilly oak. The fruit is youthful and possesses vitality, and underlined by fine, flowery tannin extraction providing plenty of structure and grip. The palate has balanced, refreshing acidity. The flavours form a concentrated core that carries with power and linearity to a very long and sustained, sweet-fruited finish. This is a very rich and succulently sweet, ripe Franc and Merlot-based blend with powerful and vibrant fruit flavours of blackberries, currants, plums, liquorice and spice on a very fine palate with great power."
Wine Enthusiast 'Top Ranked Merlot Blend in Waiheke Island, New Zealand' "This powerful, intense Bordeaux-style blend includes (in decreasing amounts) Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is richly textured, and it offers ripe boysenberry and cassis fruit, layered with supple tannins and smoky oak. Approachable now, but it will probably be better in five years, and it could still be going strong in 10 years." (2009 vintage)
Robert Parker ~ The Wine Advocate "Man O’ War is without a doubt one of New Zealand’s greatest wineries in the making and one to watch."
Jancis Robinson “Waiheke Island, home to one of the country’s best Syrah producers Man O’ War…New Zealand is second only to the Rhône in the consistency of quality it achieves.”
Raymond Chan "Man O’ War is arguably Waiheke Island’s most significant wine producer.."
Man O'War Vineyards is a leading New Zealand wine producer on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf. It is known for its consistently high-quality range of wines made from grape varieties like Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each small parcel of vines is carefully tended and harvested by hand, then vinified separately, fusing classic Old World techniques with innovative New World ideas.
Waiheke Island is a wine-producing region just 18km east of Auckland city. This hilly island is home to a healthy population of hippies and artists, as well as some of Auckland's most famous vineyards. Waiheke Island's specialty is elegant Bordeaux Blend wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but Syrah and Chardonnay are also important grape varieties planted here.
A Bordeaux Blend is any combination of those grape varieties typically used to make the red wines of Bordeaux. Cabernet Sauvignon is widely accepted as a compulsory component of any Bordeaux Blend along with Merlot. In fact, the majority of Bordeaux Blend wines are often made exclusively from a blend of these two varieties. The remaining components are Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
