The Real Review. Bob Campbell & Huan Hooke "Top 2016 Pinot Gris"

Michael Cooper "The attractive 2021 vintage (4.5*) was principally (75 per cent) estate-grown in the Sound of White vineyard in the upper Waihopai Valley. Blended with Awatere Valley grapes (25 per cent), it was mostly handled in tanks, with some use of old oak barrels. Full-bodied, it is finely poised, with generous pear and spice flavours, showing a distinct touch of complexity, excellent delicacy and balance (5.2 grams/litre of residual sugar), and an invitingly scented bouquet. Best drinking mid-2023+."

Winestate Magazine 2016 Vintage "Attractively scented, with mouth filling body and strong, ripe peach and pear-like flavours. Fresh and finely textured, with slightly mealy notes."

Bob Campbell "Light, fresh, mouth-watering wine with restrained passionfruit, lemongrass and lime zest. Restrained wine with appealing purity. Made with a light touch. Would be better if the volume was turned up a bit."

Matt Ward "Preserved citrus, elderflower, subtle tropical fruit and a touch of Jalapeño create enticing aromatics. Beautiful intensity of flavour from start to finish, with crisp and juicy minerality, medium fruit weight and threaded together with a fine line of texture. A reflection of excellent vineyards and winemaking style in a challenging season."

Bob Campbell "Weighty, textural sauvignon blanc with lime, grapefruit, passionfruit, feijoa and lemongrass flavours supported by delicious, mouth-watering acidity. A punchy wine that is classically Marlborough" (2020 vintage)

Bob Campbell "Gently tangy sauvignon blanc with lime zest, passionfruit and peppery capsicum flavours. Subtle fruit sweetness contrasts nicely with the wines grassy character. An ethereal texture adds further appeal." (2019 vintage)

Robert Parker "Pungent hints of green onion appear on the nose of the 2019 Sauvignon Blanc, accenting white grapefruit, fig and melon notes. It's medium-bodied, slightly creamy in texture, with a smooth feel, adequate concentration and medium-length finish. Drink it over the next year or two." (2019 vintage)

Organic

The Real Review, Bob Campbell "Ata Rangi's second-label pinot noir made from grapes grown on younger vines than their flagship wine. It is sporting a new label showing a stylised Pohutukawa flower. Seamless, stylish pinot noir with savoury, dried herb, spice, cherry, floral and violet flavours. Deliciously approachable now but should develop well, at least in the medium-term."

The Real Review, Huon Hooke "Medium to deep red colour with a rim of purple and a foresty bouquet that suggests substantial whole-bunch fermentation. The wine is intense and quite structured, with quite a full-body, the tannins imparting a degree of bitterness to the finish and follow-through. The bouquet is charming and captivating, the palate should follow on if given a little more time. It already drinks well with food."

James Suckling "A very attractive Crimson with bright red cherries and perfume, as well as a sappy edge that adds further interest. Plenty of spice, too. The palate has a very supple and elegant feel with a plush and fresh core of spicy red cherries and plums. Bright, vibrant and gently creamy. "

The Real Review, Bob Campbell "Aromatic pinot noir with an appealing mix of cherry, plum, mint, dried herbs, and spicy and stemmy flavours. A supple, attractive wine that's perhaps not as concentrated as its distinguished stable mate, but represents excellent value at this price. A wine of character and class." (2018 vintage)

The Real Review, Huon Hooke "Deep colour with a touch of development; reserved, earthbound aromas, herbs, dark fruits, while the palate has depth and structure. Abundant slightly sappy tannins which leave a slight bitterness, quite acceptable. Deep set raspberry and dark cherry, almost blackberry flavors. This would take some age well. Serious Pinot." (2018 vintage)

James Suckling "There’s so much to this wine. It is a pinot that really speaks of quality tannin, fresh and quite concentrated fruit flavors and a layered, succulent, fleshy and rich, dark-cherry finish. One of the best value wines on the planet, hands down!" (2018 vintage)

Falstaff "Strong crimson garnet, subtle ocher edge, broader edge lightening. Dark wild berries, a hint of preserved cherries and cranberries, candied orange zest, a hint of dried herbs, dark minerality. Medium body, red berries, freshly structured, present tannins. Salty aftertaste, a delicately spicy food wine" (2018 vintage)

Robert Parker "The 2018 Crimson Pinot Noir is a blend of fruit from vines up to about 20 years of age. Originally, it was a fruit-forward, young-vines cuvée, but this vintage is cut from sturdier cloth, showing some serious tannins on the finish. It's pretty and perfumed up front, with scents of roses and berry tea, adding raspberries and cherries on the medium-bodied, structured palate." (2018 vintage)

Decanter "It’s tempting to recommend the superb Ata Rangi Pinot Noir, or the now dormant Craighall Chardonnay (the virused block is being replanted); even the Te Wa Sauvignon Blanc is impressive for the category. But this more affordable Pinot is a real showcase for both this organic winery and Wairarapa as a whole, boasting a glorious aroma of pomegranate and rose, rounded off with lovely cherry fruit on a supple palate." (2018 vintage)

Wine Enthusiast "Like the name itself, this wine is vibrant crimson in color. There's a slight reductive funk on the nose, but this blows off quickly in the glass, replaced by bright red fruit, crushed violet, and minerals, all backed by something more savory and stalky, like soy sauce and cinnamon stick. In the mouth it's light and lithe, crunching with fresh fruit and saline notes through to the finish, and wound tightly by powdery tannins. Simultaneously serious yet approachable." (2018 vintage)

James Suckling "This delivers pristine red florals, lightly peppery notes and an array of beautifully pure, deep red-cherry aromas, as well as spiced pastry notes. The palate has lively, luscious and vibrant red-cherry flavors, framed in fine, crisp tannins. Exceptional value. (2017 vintage)

The Real Review, Huon Hooke "Deep red with a good tint of purple, the bouquet slightly closed, shy and savoury, with latent cherry and earthy, foresty aromas, seemingly unevolved and needing time to fully emerge. The palate is quite firm and solid, with a vein of bitterness from the tannin extraction - which seems part of this label's established style. It's quite structured. Lovely dark-cherry fruit aromas emerge with plenty of swirling." (2017 vintage)

Wine Enthusiast "The 2017 vintage of this wine shows none of the reduction of the previous one. Straight off the bat there are fragrances of rhubarb and red currant, florals, an array of baking spices, a forest floor earthiness and wet stone minerality. The silky palate is finely structured with the savory sinewy tannins Martinborough is known for, wound around crunchy fruit. It feels like a rainy day in autumn. " (2017 vintage)

Robert Parker "Slightly herbal and tomato-scented, the 2017 Crimson Pinot Noir still offers up enough sous-bois and cherry flavors to remain intriguing. A bit of bacon-tinged oak comes through on the medium-bodied palate, joining silky tannins on the finish. For a "second wine," this offers uncommon complexity, even if it doesn't show the concentration of Ata Rangi's top bottlings." (2017 vintage)

Matthew Jukes "This stunning estate makes the most revered Pinot Noir in New Zealand"

Lisa Perrotti-Brown eRobertParker.com "Their Pinots have always been great and yet, even in a world where the Pinot benchmark gets higher every year, Ata Rangi is better than ever."

Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with a big reputation for serious Pinot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, his wife Phyll and his sister Alison.

Bob Campbell "Fresh, punchy sauvignon blanc with gooseberry, green capsicum, cut grass, passionfruit and nettle flavours. Smooth-textured wine with good weight and a lingering finish."

Wine Enthusiast "This is an outgoing and crowd-pleasing Sauvignon with a firecracker of lime, guava, passionfruit, tomato leaf and bell pepper aromas. A big dollop of crunchy acidity is counterbalanced by subtle textural weight and a juicy stone fruit refreshment flows through to the finish." (2021 vintage)

Tim Atkin MW, International Wine Challenge "Classic fragrant aromas of gooseberries and nettles...well rounded with a crisp finish." (2020 vintage)

Decanter World Wine Awards "A tropical, richer style offering mango, passionfruit and peaches; there's some nice weight and roundness here. Medium finish." (2019 Vintage)

Wine Spectator "Shows off fragrant lemongrass flavors, mingling with citrus and mango details. Offers a refreshing finish and grace notes of fresh ginger." (2019 vintage)

Wine Enthusiast "This opens with a classic Marlborough SB nose of lifted citrus, stone fruit and bell pepper with herbal undertones. There's zippy acidity and a slippery texture on the mouthfeel. It finishes with lovely fresh citrus and herbal characters. " (2019 vintage)

Bob Campbell "Light, tangy sauvignon blanc with green-grassy, capsicum and gooseberry flavours supported by green apple-like acidity." (2018 vintage)

Wine Enthusiast "This needs time in glass to aerate and to show its passionfruit, pineapple, grapefruit and green herbed characters. Even then, the acidity is a little searing, just barely kept in check by some fruit weight." (2017 vintage)

Wine Spectator "The tangy notes of lemon-lime are appealing, accented by lemongrass and ruby grapefruit details. Finishes with a hint of juicy acidity." (2014 vintage)

The Winemaker "Quintessentially Marlborough, the wine is strikingly vibrant with aromatics of lime zest, kiwifruit, orange blossom and a subtle note of rockmelon. The palate is soft and rich initially, then carried by juicy acidity to a long refreshing finish. My philosophy is simple source outstanding fruit from exceptional vineyard sites."

Crowded House is a multi-award winning, Marlborough based winery. The name - Crowded House - could be a nod to the famous Kiwi rock band, but actually stems from the crowded, yet unique Marlborough region and the winemaker's mission to "stand out from this crowded world of wine." Crowded House wines are fresh, approachable and expressive with clean, crisp aromatics.

Bob Campbell "Bright, fresh pinot noir with floral, rose petal, cherry and subtle spice flavours. An appealing, easy-to-drink wine, with an ethereal texture and vibrant flavours. Simple and distinctive. Good varietal definition."

Bob Campbell "Gently seductive pinot noir with cherry, plum and other red fruit flavours together with violet, floral, fresh herb and mixed spice characters. Smooth-textured with a backbone of very fine tannins." (2019 vintage)

Robert Parker "Subtle cedar notes join raspberries and strawberries on the nose of the 2018 Pinot Noir. On the palate, it's a bit light and lacking texture, but it's pretty, those attractive berry shadings lingering on the tart, crisp finish." (2018 vintage)

Wine Experience "Elegant and silken with wild, dark berry flavours and gentle dried herb notes. Medium-bodied, the palate is structured and graceful with plush fruit and exceptional fruit and tannin integration which lingers in the mouth." (2016 vintage)

Wine Enthusiast "This is a likable, easygoing Pinot that's fruity but not syrupy. It leads with a bowl of berries—strawberries, raspberries and cranberries—and is quickly followed by notes of baking spice, cracked pepper and violet. It's medium bodied but on the lighter end, with lifted acidity and smooth, stalky tannins. Drink now. Christina Pickard" (2016 vintage)

Wine Spectator "Smooth and creamy vanilla-scented strawberry and pomegranate flavors are lush and spicy in this red, with details of sage and matcha. Harmonious on the finish. Drink now. 2,500 cases made, 200 cases imported. — MW" (2016 vintage)

The Winefront "Pretty perfume shows red cherry, raspberry jam, some plummy notes. Fruity as... bright and easy to drink..." (2016 vintage)

James Suckling "This has a wealth of violets on the nose, and there's a dry earthy edge. The palate has elemental shape and red-fruit flavors. Drink now." (2015 vintage)

Wine Spectator "There's a floral overtone and plenty of fresh green herbal notes to the tangy cherry flavors, with fresh green notes and tannins that firm up on the finish. Drink now. 3,000 cases made, 112 cases imported. — MW" (2015 vintage)

Robert Parker "Pale ruby-purple colored, the 2015 Pinot Noir gives a good intensity of ripe red cherry and red currant notes with a waft of underbrush. The medium-bodied palate delivers a great burst of uncomplicated red berry flavors with a soft structure and good persistence." (2015 vintage)

Falstaff "Medium crimson garnet, violet reflections, wider ocher rim. Red berries underlaid with tender tangerine zest, subtle herbal spices, restrained bouquet. Light-bodied, sweet strawberry confit, delicate tannins, elegant acidity, red berry finish, somewhat melting, stays short" (2012 vintage)

The name - Crowded House - could be a nod to the famous Kiwi rock band, but actually stems from the crowded, yet unique Marlborough region and the winemaker's mission to "stand out from this crowded world of wine." Bob Campbell "Bright, fresh pinot noir with floral, rose petal, cherry and subtle spice flavours.
