Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Deep red colour with a touch of purple in the rim. The bouquet is subdued and earth-bound, with subtle dark cherry notes; the wine is rich, fleshy and soft, fresh and smooth textured, with a prominent toasty barrel note on the back-palate. Very good wine."
Wine Enthusiast "Showing a nice bit of bottle age, this Pinot, from the Nelson region at the top of the South Island, offers up soft, attractive red-berry aromas along with dried flowers and savory herbal notes. After some time in glass, the fruit feels sweeter, almost confected. The body is light to medium, with a silky texture and a soft grip of tannins but there's a bitter note that's a little distracting and feeling of flatness."
James Suckling "Sourced from a plot a short distance from the estate vineyard, this has a similarly concentrated and earthy signature of the Upper Moutere section of the region, but is invariably a lighter, brighter and more singular style of wine from the estate Moutere bottling. Vibrant red cherries on the nose, there's attractive freshness here, some bracken and brown baking spices. Oak is bright but the fruit is on top. The palate is supple and full with really smoothly fleshy texture that holds fine, suspended tannins. Plenty of dark spiced cherry flavor, a flurry of toasty oak and a vibrant, lively kick of dark cherry flavor through the finish." (2013 vintage)
Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Reasonably light and attractively perfumed Pinot Noir with red cherry, raspberry and violet flavours. The wine has an appealing purity and delicacy." (2013 vintage)
Decanter "Lovely delicate and poised nose of ripe berry fruit entwined with coffee and liquorice. Enticing and very attractive, this is full of promise. Well fruited, sweet and spicy with subtle integrated oak, this is like a gentle floral caress on the palate." (2013 vintage)
Robert Parker, Wine Advocate "Sporting a pale ruby color, the 2013 Tom's Block Pinot Noir has notes of fresh red currants and cranberries with hints of underbrush and dried thyme on the nose. Medium-bodied, the palate is open for business with has lovely elegance and freshness, if the finish is a little short and simple." (2013 vintage)
Wine Enthusiast "Vanillan oak notes dominate on this Pinot Noir, originating from Nelson, on the northwest of New Zealand's South Island. Red berry, licorice, and savory olive characters follow, along with chunky tannins and lashings of acidity. Stylistically this is a broody, oaky, powerful expression of Pinot and one that will need food or a few years in bottle for the oak to mellow out." (2013 vintage)
James Suckling "A very attractive pinot with ample dark cherry fruits on offer, bracken and spice. Really polished and beautifully reliant on fruit rather than trimmings. The palate has density with silken texture. Really fine tannins are smoothly honed to carry a ball of darker cherry spice flavor which is reliably deep. A nice and even wine. Terrific balance." (2012 vintage)
Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Deepish red colour with a good purple tinge. The aroma is loaded with dark cherry, deep and spicy from a positive oak input. The palate is full and well-structured with good tannin presence and balance. A serious pinot of good weight and harmony, if not great length. The bold, black cherry to liqueur cherry fruit is typical." (2012 vintage)
Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Soft, supple and charming wine that has an initial and appealing suggestion of fruit sweetness but finishes pleasantly dry. Red cherry, strawberry, spice and dried her flavours. Great food wine." (2012 vintage)
Robert Parker, Wine Advocate "Made from younger vines, the 2012 Tom's Block Noir continues to offer wonderful value for a Pinot of this calibre. Pale ruby-purple colored, it has a wonderfully fragrant nose, with lovely red cherry and mulberry aromas accented by rose and violet notes plus a touch of Provence herbs. Delicately fruited in the mouth, it has a nice savory / earthy character, fine tannins and a long finish." (2012 vintage)
Neudorf Vineyards is arguably the most well-known producer in New Zealand's famous Nelson wine-growing region. Neudorf was founded in 1978 by Tim and Judy Finn, who experimented with what was then unknown wine territory, building a thriving winery that is now famous for its wines made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. The Finns were pioneers of organic farming in New Zealand and their wine-making philosophy is one of minimal intervention.
Tiritiri is a new brand from Neudorf which collaborates with named, hand-selected growers in the Nelson region to make excellent wines. All wines are created from single-vineyard which are committed to low cropping.
Nelson is a small, little-known wine region at the northern end of New Zealand's South Island. Surrounded on three sides by mountains, it enjoys a unique mesoclimate that is perfect for aromatic grape varieties. Wines made from Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer are considered to be some of the best in New Zealand.
Pinot Noir is the dominant red wine grape of Burgundy, now produced in wine regions all over the world, including western Germany, northern Italy, Chile, South Africa, Australia and, perhaps most notably, California, Oregon and New Zealand.
The essence of Pinot Noir wine is its aroma of strawberry and cherry (fresh red cherries in lighter wines and stewed black cherries in weightier examples), underpinned in the most complex examples by hints of forest floor. Well-built Pinot Noirs, particularly from warmer harvests, also exhibit notes of leather and violets, sometimes approaching the flavor spectrum of Syrah.
