Marlborough based award-winning winery, Catalina Sounds is known for wines that harness the purity and vibrancy of Marlborough’s climate and landscape. The name Catalina Sounds evolved from the majestic Catalina flying boats that played a vital role across the South Pacific during and after World War II.
Marlborough is by far New Zealand's most important wine region. Situated at the north-eastern tip of the South Island, this dry, sunny region produces around three-quarters of all New Zealand wine. It is particularly famous for its pungent, zesty Sauvignon Blanc - widely considered by critics to be the best Sauvignon currently produced anywhere on the planet. Commercial-scale viticulture began in Marlborough in the 1970s – it conquered the world within 25 years!
The Sauvignon Blanc taste is one of the most identifiable in the world of white wines for a few reasons. First, it always has crisp, high acidity. Second, it has a chemical compound called pyrazine which gives grassy, herbal or bell pepper flavors. When grown in cooler climates or picked early, the herbaceous green character is most prominent. In warmer climates or allowed to hang longer on the vine, the pyrazine character diminishes in favor of riper fruit flavors ranging from grapefruit, to passion fruit and guava.

Pinot Grigio is more than just the Italian name for Pinot Gris. Although the two names refer to a single grape variety, the wine styles they represent are clearly distinct from one another.
The more refreshing Pinot Grigio style has enjoyed great success in various countries, most recently the United States, (where it is fondly nicknamed ""Greej"") and Australia. The most common descriptors of the style are ""light"", ""crisp"" and ""dry"". These characteristics are complemented by aroma notes citing lemon, green apple and blossoms.
The Grigio style is achieved by harvesting the grapes relatively early, in an attempt to retain as much fresh acidity as possible; the variety is naturally quite low in acidity. To retain freshness and ""zing"", fermentation and storage typically take place in stainless-steel tanks.

Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Aromatic wine with appealing nectarine, lemongrass, gooseberry, lime and subtle passionfruit flavours. A punchy sauvignon with purity, energy and concentration supported by mouth-watering acidity."
Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Light bright yellow colour with pungent aromas of passionfruit, lemon and lime. If intensity is your want, this certainly provides it."
Cameron Douglas MS "Really fantastic bouquet with aromas of fresh, ripe citrus and white fleshed fruits, plenty of fresh and dried herb and a tropical fruit moment with a green papaya and mango. Delicious on the palate, but also very taut and youthful, no mistaking the acid line, this will calm over the next year allowing more of the fruit to show. Fresh herb and white fleshed fruits along with pink grapefruit and a stony mineral quality all have a voice."
James Suckling "Nettles, thyme, green apples and grapefruit on the nose. Medium-bodied, sharp and clean cut with a refreshing core of citrus and green fruit. Vivid. From organically grown grapes."
Jancis Robinson "Powerful green-fruit aroma. Really a mass of ripe fruit on the palate – well counterbalanced by acidity. Very bright and energetic with no shortage of interest and nuance on the mid palate. Definitely a superior example of the genre."
Michael Coopers "Hand-picked at several sites in the Wairau Valley, it is lees-aged in tanks but handled without oak. The 2022 vintage is a bright, light lemon/green, mouthfilling wine, with punchy, youthful, passionfruit/lime flavours, crisp, dry and lingering."
Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Crisp, dry and concentrated sauvignon blanc with nectarine, guava, salty-mineral, capsicum and lemongrass flavours. A serious sauvignon with intensity, length and a backbone of peppery phenolics. " (2021 vintage)
Bob Campbell, The Real Review "I love the purity, precision and concentration in this powerful organic sauvignon blanc. Peach, guava, melon, saline and oyster-shell flavours are underpinned by taut, ripe acidity. A very attractive sauvignon." (2020 vintage)
James Suckling "This has some youthful, flinty notes with lime peel and green passion fruit, as well as peach and wet stone. The palate is crisp, composed and quite nicely coiled into shape. Punchy and pure citrus and tropical flavors sit fresh." (2020 vintage)
Robert Parker, Wine Advocate "...boasts explosively pungent scents of boxwood, passion fruit and grapefruit. A bit more sedate on the medium-bodied palate, the flavors skew more toward pineapple and grapefruit with touches of fig and nectarine. This shows ample concentration, a silky mouthfeel, bright citrusy flavors and good length. In sum, it's a fine example of classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc." (2020 vintage)
Organic wines are made from grapes grown without pesticides, following strict organic standards. Organic wines are produced in vineyards that do not use synthetic chemicals.Certified organic wines have been certified by Biogro New Zealand.
Dog Point is a prestigious wine producer based in Marlborough, in New Zealand's South Island. As with most producers from the region, Dog Point's most notable wines are produced from Sauvignon Blanc.
The winery was established in the early 2000s by Ivan Sutherland and James Healy who had previously worked together at Cloudy Bay as viticulturalist and oenologist respectively. The vineyards were some of the earliest to be planted in Marlborough and thus have some of the oldest vines in the region. Dog Point is named for the sheep-herding history of the area.
Organic philosophies drive Dog Point's approach to wine growing and in March 2012, 150 hectares of Vineyards were certified organic by BioGro New Zealand, with another 60 hectares certified as C1 (2 years in conversion).
A flock of around 2,000 sheep including Romney, Perendale Cross and Merino Wiltshire Cross are grazed in the winter to keep the grass low and fertilise as they go.
After pruning; all the prunings, any grass or cover crops are mulched and added to the compost heap. This is spread under the vines to help conserve moisture and improve soil structure. A mob of 25 steers are also grazed on the property.
Marlborough is New Zealand's most important wine region by far. Situated at the northeastern tip of the South Island, this dry, sunny region is home to over 500 growers and produces around three-quarters of all New Zealand wine.

James Suckling "Fruity, tropical nose of rock melons, papayas, lime curd and passion fruit. Medium-bodied with tangy acidity. Clean and fruity finish." (2021 vintage)
Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Mellow, smooth-textured sauvignon with gooseberry, green capsicum, passionfruit, guava and lemongrass flavours supported by tangy acidity that drives a lingering finish." (2021 vintage)
Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Intense, smooth-textured wine with good weight and mouth-feel from barrel fermentation while retaining strong varietal identity with gooseberry, passionfruit and nectarine flavours. Rich, satisfying wine." (2020 vintage)
James Suckling "Aromas of lemon leaf, fresh straw, flint and grapefruit pith. Medium-bodied. Subtle and nuanced with steady balance. Baked citrus and herbs are characterized by flint and crushed stone. Barrel fermented. (2020 vintage)
New Zealand Wine Rater "An intense, attractive, almost honeyed bouquet su ggestive of the complexing influence of lees and old barrels. There's notes of white flowers, sweet pea, beeswax, vanilla, sage and spice. A soft, lush, mellow, textural wine supported by toasty, vanilla flavours adding complexity. Great consumer appeal for those who appreciate complex Sauvignon styles." (2020 vintage)
Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot "Super wine this and a great example of how well handed oak treatment can add so much interest to sauvignon blanc. You can see plenty of winemaking effort as it opens up with guava and floral aromatics well supported by powerful oatmeal barrel ferment and vanilla bean oak. There is plenty of oak here but it sits nicely in the wine. The palate is then dry and rich – exotic tropical fruits and oak again giving great impact which is then lifted by touches of leesy gunflint. It’s a serious food wine too for fancy veal or scallops." (2019 vintage)
New Zealand Wine Rater "Intensely aromatic, ripe and complex on the nose with alluring aromas of rock melon, yellow plum, lemon curd and white peach complexed by enticing roasted fennel and vanilla notes from oak influence. A generous, hedonistic, rich, textural style showing depth and complexity." (2019 vintage)
World Wine "This is good stuff. It's tempered through the mouth and offers a sense of calm. That calm of the water in the bay before the wind picks up after sunrise. That. Ripples of passionfruit and passionfruit curd early with shades of gooseberry . It's creamy with pastry feels too. But that passionfruit rides high and long. A lemony tang on close seals the deal. Yeah, it's good stuff." (2019 vintage)
Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide " Bright, light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling and sweet-fruited, with deep, ripe, tropical fruit flavours, finely integrated oak adding richness and complexity, fresh acidity and a long, harmonious finish." (2019 vintage)

New Zealand Wine Rater "An intensely aromatic and wildly herbal nose, with edamame, broad beans, fennel, and fire ember notes. Quite European in style on the palate... vinous, dry and textural with stone sucking acidity and some lees richness. A distinctive style that is sure to find fans, especially with food." (2021 vinatge)
New Zealand Wine Rater "A lush, rich, intense, voluminous style of Sauvigno n. Pronounced aroma of ripe citrus, white peach, rock melon combined with more herbal characters and crushed green peas. A dry, concentrated, weighty wine that speaks of different picking dates and the balance of different ripeness levels. Well done." (2020 vinatge)
Raymond Chan "...The mouthfeel is fresh with crisp, lacy acidity and the wine flows along a soft-textured line leading to a moderately lingering, mouthwatering finish. This is a cool-spectrum fruited Sauvignon Blanc with surprisingly soft care and line with balanced acid zestiness...The nose is very fresh with intense and penetrating aromas of grass, nettles, stalky elements and fresh herbs. This is very cool-spectrum in expression. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is elegant and slender in proportion with a gently concentrated core of gooseberries, fresh herbs, nettles, cut-grass and stalky notes." (2017 vintage)
Bob Campbell "A fruit-focused Bordeaux-style sauvignon blanc...gains added complexity from a blend of 5% Semillon." (2017 vintage)
Rober Parker, Wine Advocate "A small portion (12%) of the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc went into barrel, which has given this wine a pleasantly creamy mid-palate and silky texture. There's a bit of a green streak to the aromas and flavors, hinting at beans or asparagus, but that's mostly balanced by citrus and stone fruit notes." (2016 vintage)
Decanter Wine Awards "Lovely concentration and depth of vanilla, nut, lime, apple and spice flavours. A memorable wine with decent acidity and weight. Lengthy finish with a pinch of spice." (2016 vintage)
Sam Kim "Handpicked from their estate vineyard, the wine was blended with a small amount of Semillon for added complexity. The beautifully fragrant bouquet shows grapefruit, green apple, lemongrass and stone fruit characters. It is vibrant and brightly flavoured on the palate, and displays fine texture and lovely focus, brilliantly structured by crisp acidity." (2016 vintage)
Bob Campbell "Appealing purity and a perfect balance of tangy acidity that helps drive a lengthy finish"
The Winemaker "Stylish and restrained with herbaceous aromas intertwined with fresh mint, lemongrass and sea spray. Focused and light with a nice hint of texture from the barrel to balance the fresh acidity and vibrancy of fruit that the variety is known for. As with all our fruit, the sauvignon blanc is hand-harvested before being gently whole bunched pressed.."

Wine Spectator "The tangy notes of lemon-lime are appealing, accented by lemongrass and ruby grapefruit details. Finishes with a hint of juicy acidity." (2014 vintage)
The Winemaker "Quintessentially Marlborough, the wine is strikingly vibrant with aromatics of lime zest, kiwifruit, orange blossom and a subtle note of rockmelon. Sauvignon Blanc is currently the bestselling white wine in Singapore. It pairs well with white meats including Chicken, Pork and Turkey. It also complements fish.
Sauvignon Blanc is a white-wine grape from western France, now successfully grown in emerging and established wine regions all over the world. While the grape may be more readily associated with the Loire Valley (for its pivotal role in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé), it is more likely to have originated from Bordeaux, where it is typically blended with Semillon.
In the late 20th Century, a new region began to gain a reputation as one of the great Sauvignon Blanc regions of the world: Marlborough, at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island. The rapid development of the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most dramatic events in the world of wine.
Outside France and New Zealand, the variety has been relatively successful in New World regions such as California, Chile (particularly the Casablanca and San Antonio valleys) and South Africa. Even in Australia, the variety can thrive in the cooler coastal areas of the south. In Europe, the cool, sunny sub-alpine slopes of Alto Adige and Friuli in northern Italy produce high-quality Sauvignon Blanc, which is used in blends with native varieties like Friulano or on its own.

The palate is soft and rich initially, then carried by juicy acidity to a long refreshing finish. My philosophy is simple source outstanding fruit from exceptional vineyard sites."
