1 x Brokenwood Late Picked Semillon 2021 ~ Hunter Valley, NSW , Australia
5 star winery James Halliday (2016 vintage)
The winemaker "Beautiful green/yellow colour with great aromas of fresh apple and tropical fruits. These carry to the palate and are given a bit more prominence due to the slightly riper grapes. The sweetness is balanced by the fresh apple acidity that runs through to the finish. With 10.5% alcohol, this is a refreshing and easy-drinking wine".
The winemaker "Brokenwood has quite a history of Late Picked styles starting in 1983 and we have used Semillon, Gewurztraminer from the Hunter and Riesling from McLaren Vale. The fruit is allowed to get a bit riper and then the fermentation stopped when there was a perfect balance between acid, sugar and alcohol."
James Halliday "A deservedly fashionable winery producing consistently excellent wines. Its big-selling Hunter Semillon provides the volume to balance the limited quantities of the flagships ILR Semillon and Graveyard Shiraz. Brokenwood purchased the Graveyard Vineyard from Hungerford Hill in '78 and has been working to totally rehabilitate the vineyard over the ensuing decades. It's been a vine by vine exercise, with a degree of experimentation of rootstocks and clonal material from other, even older vineyards. Next, there is a range of wines coming from regions including Beechworth (a major resource is the associated Indigo Vineyard), Orange, Central Ranges, McLaren Vale, Cowra and elsewhere. In 2017 Iain Riggs celebrated his 35th vintage at the helm of Brokenwood, offering a unique mix of winemaking skills, management of a diverse business, and an unerring ability to keep Brokenwood's high profile fresh and newsworthy. He has also contributed a great deal to various wine industry organisations."
Established in 1970 Brokenwood Wines is one of Australia's most reputable premium wine labels and a must-visit in the Hunter Valley. It was established by Australia's leading wine critic, James Halliday.
Consistently listed as a 5-star winery, Brokenwood is home to the famous Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, the highly acclaimed ILR Reserve Semillon, and the popular Cricket Pitch Range.

Best drinking mid-2023+."

Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion "Upfront and sweet-fruited red that is ready to go right now. Ripe red berries, blue fruits and juniper spice drive the engine. Smooth and succulent on the palate. Meets the price point perfectly."
Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Deep ruby colour without purple tints, but the wine is in OK condition, with some developed raspberry, chocolate nuances. There's a whiff of oak and a lot of developed characteristics. The palate is full-bodied and drying, showing development from age but not really complex." (2015 vintage)
Tastings.com " Black garnet color. Aromas and flavors of candied bacon, purple fruit, nutmeg, and black pepper with a slightly chewy, crisp, dry-yet-fruity medium-full body and a smooth, charming, medium-length finish with notes of plum pudding, grilled spice cake, and sage tea with well-integrated tannins and moderate oak flavor. Huon Hooke "Deep red colour with tints of black and purple. The aromas remind of raspberry jam and 'forest floor', herbal and earth notes, the palate medium-bodied at most, with a soft and savoury texture and light, powdery tannins. The finish drops away rather quickly. It fades a bit but the wine is very approachable young."
Stuart Knox "Medium and bright ruby-red colour. Raspberries, broken slate and black peppercorns on the nose. A light to medium-bodied shiraz. It glides lightly across the tongue with red fruits and slate-like minerality. Acidity gives lift and brightness, and a fine tannic structure adds length. Very much a 'syrah." (2017 vintage)
James Halliday "There's a welter of dark fruits in this wine, and an equally handsome amount of tannins and oak. Wild, sweet blackberry flavours run through to the finish." (2016 vintage)
Tasting Notes "A seductive bouquet of fresh blueberries with strawberries and cream confection give way to cherry cola and fragrant white pepper notes. A soft and juicy palate abounds with ripe blueberries, Satsuma plums and red berry sweets. Whilst underlying milk chocolate, fresh vanilla pods and sweetened spices make for a memorable marriage of flavours. A velvety structure with lingering flavours makes this wine a crowd pleaser in any situation!"
Winemaker Notes "The fruit for this wine comes from Hazel’s Vineyard which is our southernmost vineyard. Whole berries were transferred by gravity into 5 tonne concrete fermenters. 30% of the fruit was hand harvested for whole bunch fermentation and additional spice and aromatic lift. Wild fermentation underwent at low temperatures and gentle extraction was carried out by pumping over twice daily. After 8 to 14 days on skins the juice was pressed and transferred to large format oak casks for 14 months maturation."

The move towards organics and sustainable farming has had a positive impact on the quality of the wines, and it is a delight to witness so much diversity in the vineyards - from experimental clones and new plantings, to sheep, chickens, olives and vegetables.
