5 Stars Winery - Halliday Wine Companion

Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Grassy, lemony aromas, light-bodied clean and lively on the tongue. The palate is refreshing, with crisp acidity. A very good seafood white. " (2017 vintage)

Campbell Mattinson, Halliday Wine Companion "It's essentially crisp and fruit-driven, though a gentle slip of sweetness won't do its popularity any harm." (2015 vintage)

Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Parsley herbal aromas, a bit green, with almost a suggestion of basil. Simple, light-bodied, still fresh and in good drinking condition.' (2015 vintage)

James Halliday "A deservedly fashionable winery producing consistently excellent wines. Its big-selling Hunter Semillon provides the volume to balance the limited quantities of the flagships ILR Semillon and Graveyard Shiraz. Brokenwood purchased the Graveyard Vineyard from Hungerford Hill in '78 and has been working to totally rehabilitate the vineyard over the ensuing decades. It's been a vine by vine exercise, with a degree of experimentation of rootstocks and clonal material from other, even older vineyards. Next, there is a range of wines coming from regions including Beechworth (a major resource is the associated Indigo Vineyard), Orange, Central Ranges, McLaren Vale, Cowra and elsewhere. In 2017 Iain Riggs celebrated his 35th vintage at the helm of Brokenwood, offering a unique mix of winemaking skills, management of diverse business, and an unerring ability to keep Brokenwood's high profile fresh and newsworthy. He has also contributed a great deal to various wine industry organisations."

Established in 1970 Brokenwood Wines is one of Australia's most reputable premium wine labels and a must-visit in the Hunter Valley. It was established by Australia's leading wine critic, James Halliday.

Consistently listed as a 5-star winery, Brokenwood is home to the famous Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, the highly acclaimed ILR Reserve Semillon, and the popular Cricket Pitch Range.

The Hunter Valley is the best-known and most highly prized wine region in New South Wales. It is known as the region where the Australian wine industry started. The valley's winemakers have pioneered two distinctive styles of wine (oaked Chardonnay and dry Semillon) and has retained a strong connection with both of them. The Hunter Valley's most famous wine style is its distinctive dry Semillon, made there since the 1870s. Hunter Valley Semillons are renowned for their ability to improve with age.

Sauvignon Blanc – Semillon is a classic white wine blend. It is most widely produced in France, most notably Bordeaux's Graves district, where both Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are well-established varieties. It also has more recently caught on in Australia, particularly Margaret River. The versatile blend is typically made into crisp, dry wines, but it is also the blend of choice for the world's most prestigious sweet wine style, Sauternes. The blend is endowed with vibrant acidity and grassy aromas by Sauvignon Blanc, and its structure and mouthfeel from Semillon. This blend is a modern, simplified version of the classic White Bordeaux Blend, in which Muscadelle, Sauvignon Gris, Ugni Blanc, Colombard and Merlot Blanc may be added to the mix.

Wine Enthusiast "This is an outgoing and crowd-pleasing Sauvignon with a firecracker of lime, guava, passionfruit, tomato leaf and bell pepper aromas. Wine Enthusiast "This opens with a classic Marlborough SB nose of lifted citrus, stone fruit and bell pepper with herbal undertones. There's zippy acidity and a slippery texture on the mouthfeel. It finishes with lovely fresh citrus and herbal characters. " (2019 vintage)

Bob Campbell "Light, tangy sauvignon blanc with green-grassy, capsicum and gooseberry flavours supported by green apple-like acidity." (2018 vintage)

Wine Enthusiast "This needs time in glass to aerate and to show its passionfruit, pineapple, grapefruit and green herbed characters. Even then, the acidity is a little searing, just barely kept in check by some fruit weight." (2017 vintage)

Wine Spectator "The tangy notes of lemon-lime are appealing, accented by lemongrass and ruby grapefruit details. Finishes with a hint of juicy acidity." (2014 vintage)

The Winemaker "Quintessentially Marlborough, the wine is strikingly vibrant with aromatics of lime zest, kiwifruit, orange blossom and a subtle note of rockmelon. The palate is soft and rich initially, then carried by juicy acidity to a long refreshing finish. My philosophy is simple source outstanding fruit from exceptional vineyard sites."

Crowded House is a multi-award winning, Marlborough based winery. The name - Crowded House - could be a nod to the famous Kiwi rock band, but actually stems from the crowded, yet unique Marlborough region and the winemaker's mission to "stand out from this crowded world of wine." Crowded House wines are fresh, approachable and expressive with clean, crisp aromatics.

Marlborough is by far New Zealand's most important wine region. Situated at the north-eastern tip of the South Island, this dry, sunny region produces around three-quarters of all New Zealand wine. It is particularly famous for its pungent, zesty Sauvignon Blanc - widely considered by critics to be the best Sauvignon currently produced anywhere on the planet. Commercial-scale viticulture began in Marlborough the 1970s – it conquered the world within 25 years!

Sauvignon Blanc is currently the bestselling white wine in Singapore. It pairs well with white meats including Chicken, Pork and Turkey. It also complements fish.

Sauvignon Blanc is a white-wine grape from western France, now successfully grown in emerging and established wine regions all over the world. While the grape may be more readily associated with the Loire Valley (for its pivotal role in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé), it is more likely to have originated from Bordeaux, where it is typically blended with Semillon.

In the late 20th Century, a new region began to gain a reputation as one of the great Sauvignon Blanc regions of the world: Marlborough, at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island. The rapid development of the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most dramatic events in the world of wine.

Outside France and New Zealand, the variety has been relatively successful in New World regions such as California, Chile (particularly the Casablanca and San Antonio valleys) and South Africa. Even in Australia, the variety can thrive in the cooler coastal areas of the south. In Europe, the cool, sunny sub-alpine slopes of Alto Adige and Friuli in northern Italy produce high-quality Sauvignon Blanc, which is used in blends with native varieties like Friulano or on its own.

Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Light, fresh, mouth-watering wine with restrained passionfruit, lemongrass and lime zest. Restrained wine with appealing purity. Made with a light touch. Would be better if the volume was turned up a bit." (2022 vintage)

New Zealand Wine Rater "Restrained, vinous, nose with a herbal lift that keeps you guessing and going back for more. With time in the glass, there are aromas of lemon zest, honeydew melon, nectarine stone, blackcurrant leaf, chervil and Thai basil. An understated, subtle, stylish wine with a delicate, saline, oyster-shell freshness that for all its elegance still shows good concentration and depth." (2022 vintage)

Wine Spectator "Distinctly herbal, with notes of lemon basil, lemongrass and thyme to complement the core of lemon-lime and grassy flavors, while a touch of salty minerality lingers on the finish." (2022 vintage)

Matt Ward "Preserved citrus, elderflower, subtle tropical fruit and a touch of Jalapeño create enticing aromatics. Beautiful intensity of flavour from start to finish, with crisp and juicy minerality, medium fruit weight and threaded together with a fine line of texture. A reflection of excellent vineyards and winemaking style in a challenging season." (2022 vintage)

Wine Spectator "This juicy and succulent white opens on a fresh note of lemon verbena and lemongrass, with wonderful purity to the pear, Honeycrisp apple and lemon curd flavors, backed by a lingering note of fresh yuzu juice." (2021 vintage)

Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Weighty, textural sauvignon blanc with lime, grapefruit, passionfruit, feijoa and lemongrass flavours supported by delicious, mouth-watering acidity. A punchy wine that is classically Marlborough" (2020 vintage)

Marlborough based award-winning winery, Catalina Sounds is known for wines that harness the purity and vibrancy of Marlborough’s climate and landscape. The name Catalina Sounds evolved from the majestic Catalina flying boats that played a vital role across the South Pacific during and after World War II.

Commercial-scale viticulture began in Marlborough in the 1970s – it conquered the world within 25 years!

The Sauvignon Blanc taste is one of the most identifiable in the world of white wines for a few reasons. First, it always has crisp, high acidity. Second, it has a chemical compound called pyrazine which gives grassy, herbal or bell pepper flavors. When grown in cooler climates or picked early, the herbaceous green character is most prominent. In warmer climates or allowed to hang longer on the vine, the pyrazine character diminishes in favor of riper fruit flavors ranging from grapefruit, to passion fruit and guava.

Organic

Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Aromatic wine with appealing nectarine, lemongrass, gooseberry, lime and subtle passionfruit flavours. A punchy sauvignon with purity, energy and concentration supported by mouth-watering acidity."

Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Light bright yellow colour with pungent aromas of passionfruit, lemon and lime. If intensity is your want, this certainly provides it."

Cameron Douglas MS "Really fantastic bouquet with aromas of fresh, ripe citrus and white fleshed fruits, plenty of fresh and dried herb and a tropical fruit moment with a green papaya and mango. Delicious on the palate, but also very taut and youthful, no mistaking the acid line, this will calm over the next year allowing more of the fruit to show. Fresh herb and white fleshed fruits along with pink grapefruit and a stony mineral quality all have a voice."

James Suckling "Nettles, thyme, green apples and grapefruit on the nose. Medium-bodied, sharp and clean cut with a refreshing core of citrus and green fruit. Vivid. From organically grown grapes."

Jancis Robinson "Powerful green-fruit aroma. Really a mass of ripe fruit on the palate – well counterbalanced by acidity. Very bright and energetic with no shortage of interest and nuance on the mid palate. Definitely a superior example of the genre."

Michael Coopers "Hand-picked at several sites in the Wairau Valley, it is lees-aged in tanks but handled without oak. The 2022 vintage is a bright, light lemon/green, mouthfilling wine, with punchy, youthful, passionfruit/lime flavours, crisp, dry and lingering."

Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Crisp, dry and concentrated sauvignon blanc with nectarine, guava, salty-mineral, capsicum and lemongrass flavours. A serious sauvignon with intensity, length and a backbone of peppery phenolics. " (2021 vintage)

Bob Campbell, The Real Review "I love the purity, precision and concentration in this powerful organic sauvignon blanc. Peach, guava, melon, saline and oyster-shell flavours are underpinned by taut, ripe acidity. A very attractive sauvignon." (2020 vintage)

James Suckling "This has some youthful, flinty notes with lime peel and green passion fruit, as well as peach and wet stone. The palate is crisp, composed and quite nicely coiled into shape. Punchy and pure citrus and tropical flavors sit fresh." (2020 vintage)

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate "...boasts explosively pungent scents of boxwood, passion fruit and grapefruit. A bit more sedate on the medium-bodied palate, the flavors skew more toward pineapple and grapefruit with touches of fig and nectarine. This shows ample concentration, a silky mouthfeel, bright citrusy flavors and good length. In sum, it's a fine example of classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc." (2020 vintage)

Organic wines are made from grapes grown without pesticides, following strict organic standards. Organic wines are produced in vineyards that do not use synthetic chemicals.Certified organic wines have been certified by Biogro New Zealand.

Dog Point is a prestigious wine producer based in Marlborough, in New Zealand's South Island. As with most producers from the region, Dog Point's most notable wines are produced from Sauvignon Blanc.

The winery was established in the early 2000s by Ivan Sutherland and James Healy who had previously worked together at Cloudy Bay as viticulturalist and oenologist respectively. The vineyards were some of the earliest to be planted in Marlborough and thus have some of the oldest vines in the region. Dog Point is named for the sheep-herding history of the area.

Organic philosophies drive Dog Point's approach to wine growing and in March 2012, 150 hectares of Vineyards were certified organic by BioGro New Zealand, with another 60 hectares certified as C1 (2 years in conversion).

A flock of around 2,000 sheep including Romney, Perendale Cross and Merino Wiltshire Cross are grazed in the winter to keep the grass low and fertilise as they go.

After pruning; all the prunings, any grass or cover crops are mulched and added to the compost heap. This is spread under the vines to help conserve moisture and improve soil structure. A mob of 25 steers are also grazed on the property.

Marlborough is New Zealand's most important wine region by far. Situated at the northeastern tip of the South Island, this dry, sunny region is home to over 500 growers and produces around three-quarters of all New Zealand wine.

Marlborough based award-winning winery, Catalina Sounds is known for wines that harness the purity and vibrancy of Marlborough’s climate and landscape. The name Catalina Sounds evolved from the majestic Catalina flying boats that played a vital role across the South Pacific during and after World War II.

5 Stars Michael Coopers
