4.5 Stars - Michael Cooper's Wine Buyers Guide 2022
5 Stars - Michael Cooper (2019 vintage)

Bob Campbell "Crisp, vibrant sauvignon blanc with Rose’s lime juice, passionfruit and gooseberry avours. Impressive purity and power, with an ethereal texture and lingering nish.” (2020 vintage)

Cameron Douglas MS "Attractive fruit-centric bouquet of peach tea, sweet lemon, apple then fresh hay and herb notes. Fresh, fleshy and textural palate of lemon and tropical fruit, plenty of salivating acidity and a balanced, lengthy finish." (2020 vintage)

Rebecca Gibb MW "Just-ripe pineapple and gooseberry meet capsicum and mint in the 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Aotea Nelson. While light-bodied, it offers more concentration than the average bear, with nice sinew and line on the firm, mouth-watering finish." (2020 vintage)

Three Wine Men, Oz Clarke "Fabulous classy wine, magically blending a lees richness of nuts and bread crust with probing, mouthwatering green apple and lemon pith acidity. Great balance between zesty acid and ripeness” (2019 vintage)

Decanter "The Aotea range is Seifried's pinnacle of production, the fruit for this wine sourced from the Rabbit Island vineyard 1.5km from the sea. It sees no oak, allowing the ripe apricot, zippy lemongrass and grassy green characters to shine, which linger on the long, tropical finish." (2019 vintage)

Jancis Robinson "Intense and lively peapod and green fig. Ripe and rich but with no unwanted sweetness. Generous, full of fruit but still so fresh. At last a wine that tastes dry." (2019 vintage)

The Winemaker "Aromatic and fresh Sauvignon Blanc flavours were encouraged prior to vintage through careful canopy management. The fruit was de-stemmed and pressed immediately after harvest and a cool fermentation was initiated in stainless steel tanks to retain the clean, fresh aromatic fruit characters."

Wine Spectator "... Seifried is a winery located in the lesser-known Nelson appellation on the northern tip of the South Island, just west of Marlborough. The region has the highest sunshine hours in all of New Zealand. Farther inland, mountain ranges to the east, south and west provide shelter for the valleys and benchlands, while the northern areas benefit from a more maritime climate. The summers are warm and relatively dry and the nights cool. Seifried pulls from two vineyard sources to make this complex and juicy white. One is just 10 miles from the coast, adding liveliness to the wine, while the other is sheltered from the coast, with stony soils yielding riper fruit."

The Real Review "The Seifried family now farm over 200 hectares across eight sustainably accredited vineyards in the Nelson region. Wines are exported to 21 countries around the globe and all three Seifried “children” are fully involved in the family business. The Seifried family really are, pioneering family winegrowers."

Decanter "Born in Austria, Hermann Seifried studied winemaking in his homeland and in Germany before moving to South Africa to gain hands-on experience with KWV. His next (and so far final) step on his journey was to New Zealand, where he arrived without a word of English in his vocabulary. Here he met (Sweet) Agnes, [which some of his wines are named] whom he married in 1971. They held a joint ambition to plant their own vineyard in Nelson at the very north of New Zealand’s South Island, where they spotted the immense potential. Despite the naysayers who claimed that Nelson was too far south and too cold an environment in which to fully ripen grapes, they pressed ahead, and 1973 marked the planting of the first vines, with the first vintage released three years later."

London Wine Show "Seifried Estate is a company devoted to sustainable winegrowing and producing the very best Nelson [New Zealand] has to offer."

Seifried Estate was created by New Zealand winemaking pioneers, Austrian-born Hermann Seifried and his New Zealander wife Agnes. They planted their first grapes in the Moutere Valley near Nelson and made their first wine in 1976. Seifried is a founding member of 'Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand' and was an early adopter of the programme when both the winery and vineyard auditing programmes were first established in the New Zealand wine industry in the mid-1990s. The programme aims to deliver a framework for viticultural and winemaking practices that protect the environment while efficiently and economically producing premium wine grapes and wine.

Seifried's Aotea wines include a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Gewürztraminer, and are small-parcel, single-vineyard wines made from the best fruit from the estate.

Nelson is a small, little-known wine region at the northern end of New Zealand's South Island. Surrounded on three sides by mountains, it enjoys a unique mesoclimate that is perfect for aromatic grape varieties. Wines made from Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer are considered to be some of the best in New Zealand.

The Sauvignon Blanc taste is one of the most identifiable in the world of white wines for a few reasons. First, it always has crisp, high acidity. Second, it has a chemical compound called pyrazine which gives grassy, herbal or bell pepper flavors. When grown in cooler climates or picked early, the herbaceous green character is most prominent. In warmer climates or allowed to hang longer on the vine, the pyrazine character diminishes in favor of riper fruit flavors ranging from grapefruit, to passion fruit and guava.
