5 Stars Winery - James Halliday

Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Deep red-purple colour with a lovely complex cedary, briary, cassis and toasty barrel bouquet. This flows smoothly into an elegantly structured and finely boned palate which is harmonious and deep, with a suavity that is pure cabernet. A wine with class."

James Suckling "An intense nose with lots of ripe, almost candied blackberries, dried rosemary and lavender. Some vanilla and licorice, too. Its full-bodied with sticky tannins and impressive length. Has a long and rather sweet aftertaste."

Robert Parker "... is a touch old-school in its earthy approach to Cabernet aromatics but consistent to a tee, and really well made at that. There are notes of tobacco leaf, allspice, cassis and blackcurrant. Lovely."

Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion "Earthy, chocolatey and shaped by dark, resinous oak. This is a real brooder. There's no room for air or light, this is a moonless vortex of black fruit, swirling midnight tannins and in the penumbra, a flurry of shadowy acidity. perhaps some of these characters will unfurl as the wine is decanted, or over time, but if you seek the pure red core that is here, but hiding, don't wait too long. Within 5 years will grasp it."

Ray Jordan, WA Wine Guide "“This clearly one of the best cabernets from Plantagenet in this range. It is classically structured and defined. Deep blackcurrant strikes in waves then the ironstone minerality and black olive hit. Dark chocolate and black fruits merge seamlessly in the middle palate, while the fine, sinewy tannins extend to the finish” (2018 vintage)

James Suckling "A gently smoky edge and flinty dark berries abound here. There’s a cedary edge and then a wall of ripe dark berries. The oak glazes the palate with vanilla tones and the rich core of ripe dark berries holds long." (2018 vintage)

James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion " Fresh, juicy fruits jump around on the medium-bodied palate, tannins allied with acidity making their mark on the finish and aftertaste. (2018 vintage)

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit “This is wonderfully fruited and magnificently styled; the bouquet shows crème de cassis, tobacco, cedar, warm spice and violet aromas, leading to a concentrated palate that offers outstanding depth and focus together with refined mouthfeel and layers of fine chalky tannins. Harmonious, seamless, classically structured and immensely appealing. At its best: now to 2032' (2017 vintage)

Plantagenet was established by founder Tony Smith with the planting of five vineyards; Bouverie in 1968 (sold in 2017), Wyjup in ’71, Rocky Horror 1 in ’88, Rocky Horror 2 in ’97 and Rosetta in ’99. These vineyards remain the cornerstones of the substantial production of the consistently high-quality wines that have always been the mark of Plantagenet: highly aromatic riesling, tangy citrus-tinged chardonnay, glorious Rhône-style shiraz and ultra-stylish cabernet sauvignon.

Great Southern is one of the largest wine growing regions in Australia, running along the south coast of Western Australia. It stretches 150km (93 miles) from the eastern edge of Manjimup (in the west) to the Pallinup River in the east, where the more cereal-focused expanses of 'Central Western Australia' begin. The region's northern edge lies almost perfectly on the 34th parallel while the coastline marks the southern boundary - a distance of around 100km (62 miles), north-to-south.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Huon Hooke "Deep, dark, brick-red to ruby colours, with a mocha, dark chocolate and earthy note, which almost suggests slight forward development, the palate confirming that it is a little lacking vitality. It has richness and concentration, but is not developing in a way that suggests further cellaring. It's good drinking now." (2014 Vintage)

Qwine "Dense and generous......... A fab Shiraz from South Australia...There's plenty of interest courtesy of clove, dark chocolate, charred oak, licks of vanilla and fruit cake. Some more air to breathe and touches of cedar are prominent. A generous wine with smooth feels and a long finish - top stuff." (2013 Vintage)

Winestate "A full bodied maturing shiraz with a focus of plums, olives, sweetness and tarry notes." (2013 Vintage)

The Winemaker "Hints of dark chocolate and vanilla aromas greet you in the glass. This develops into dark berry fruits and concentrated plum fruits. The palate is full and luscious with good palate weight and a nice dusting of oak. The smooth but present tannin completes this wine with power and prestige. Will complex and age well over the next 10 years." (2013 Vintage)

The wine was aged for 28 months in new American & Second Use French, tightly grained, barrels.

Patrick's of Coonawarra was founded by Patrick Tocaciu; one of Australia's leading wine (and AFL football) figures. Patrick's reputation for producing exceptional wine earned him many international accolades for the major labels he worked as Chief Winemaker, including; Tollana, Penfolds, and Hollick Wines. Patrick's distinguished reputation continued with the establishment of his own Patrick of Coonawarra Estate label. The wines are built on the solid foundation of extensive estate vineyards: 36 hectares in Coonawarra and 42 hectares in Wrattonbully. The Wrattonbully plantings contain shiraz, sauvignon blanc, and some of the riesling. All of the cabernet is grown in Coonawarra. The Estate is now managed by his eonologist son, Luke who continues the tradition of producing wines of varietal and regional excellence.

Coonawarra is the most important wine region within South Australia, credited with producing some of the best red wines in the entire country, and often described as Australia's most famous terroir. .

Shiraz, also known as Syrah is a popular red wine. Though the spiritual homeland of this red grape is France, Syrah has been planted throughout the world to great success. It expresses itself differently depending on the climate, soil and regional style.

Syrah is typically bold and full-bodied, with aromatic notes of smoke, black fruit and pepper spice. Stylistically, it can be round and fruity, or dense and tannic. And in warmer New World regions like Australia, Syrah is most often be called Shiraz.

Winemakers who work in cooler-climate growing regions, both in the Old World and New World, tend to call their wines Syrah. The most famous examples come from the northern Rhône Valley of France, notably Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. In the New World, in regions like Sonoma Coast, California; Yarra Valley, Australia; and parts of Chile, the wines are called Syrah because they emulate the leaner, acid-driven, savory styles of the Old World French classics.

Shiraz tends to come from warmer growing climates, namely the South Australian regions of Barossa, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills. Stylistically, these wines are lush, fruit-forward examples that embody the warmer, sunnier climate. Shiraz is so important to Australian viticulture that it is the most planted grape variety in the majority of Australian vineyards and has become virtually synonymous with the country's wine regions, and in particular the Barossa Valley.

Five Star Halliday Rating (2016 vintage)
James Halliday Top Ten ~ Best New Wineries 2015 (2016 vintage)
#6 Top Wineries of Australia 2020 ~ The Real Review

Halliday Wine Companion, Erin Larkin "Quite reductive initially, but it blows off. This is consistently an elegant and supple wine, with very fine structure and saturating density of flavour. The length of flavour endures long past the final sip, showing the pedigree of fruit and the care and attention in both the vineyard and winery."

The Wine Front, Gary Walsh "All the cracked pepper and blackberry, the hint of wetsuit neoprene reduction, ground spices, char-grilled sausages on the BBQ. Medium-bodied, blueberry and blackberry, husky wheatgerm flavour and tannin, sweetness chopped back with thyme and black olive, clean acidity, boysenberry pie and a dry nutty finish of excellent length. Excellent. Savoury. Regional. Quite the looker."

The Real Review, Stuart Knox "Intense ruby and deep purple colours. A bright nose of blackberries, crushed-shells and dry herbs. A medium-weight red with well-concentrated fruits, all layered with broken stone and morcilla savoury notes. Quite firm and ripe tannins grip the mouth, but release into the finish leaving a pleasing fan of softness."

Waters Wine "Shiraz/Syrah and Australia. It just works. The 2021 is quiet different from previous releases; rounder in shape, ample with finer, lacier tannins. Not so sleek or linear and a dialling back of the mouth puckering mineral acidity. Blueberry, sweet cherry, violets, raspberry and delicate spice. Plush, without any sense of heaviness, a triumph of a full body in perfect proportions. As charming as it is powerful, finishing with very fine tannins. I think this will surprise in the cellar, despite the gentle grip, for at least two decades."

The Real Review, Huon Hooke "Deep, bright red/purple colour with a sweet, ripe blueberry to blackberry aroma. Traces of ironstone. A superb array of spices and berry fruits, pepper among them. Great elegance and persistence; a very stylish modern Aussie shiraz which justifies the syrah name." (2018 vintage)

Young Gun of Wine, Australian Vineyard of The Year 2020 "The Swinney vineyard represents modern viticulture interwoven with Old-World techniques, executed with precision through a combination of exhaustive manual work and state-of-the-art technology, and all underpinned by an environmental focus...and the quality of the resulting wines, is truly extraordinary and inspiring.”

Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine ~ Wines to Watch ~ Nick Ryan "...an impressive suite of wines that provide compelling evidence of real understanding of site and dedication to capturing what makes it special."

The Swinneys are a pair of brother-and-sister winemakers who are one of the rare new Australian wineries to have two of their wines invited onto the esteemed wine lists of The Ivy and Savoy Grill (Gordon Ramsay) restaurants in London. Frankland River is a key Australian wine sub-region the south of Western Australia. It is located just inland from the Southern Ocean coast, 115 miles east of Margaret River. Frankland River is the coldest wine region in continental Australia. Riesling is the area's specialty, with its crisp, fresh style standing out from the more diesel–kerosene notes found in the warmer regions further north.

Halliday Wine Companion Awards, Jane Faulkner "Fragrant with so many spices, plus some toasty cedary oak too. A flush of ripe fruit works across the more medium-bodied palate offering a combo of rhubarb, cherries and pips plus chinotto tang. The tannins have some give and it's refreshing to the very last drop"

Sydney Morning Herald - Australia's Top 52 Wineries of 2020 "TarraWarra Estate - #28. Very fine chardonnays and pinot noirs, especially under the MDB, Reserve and single-block labels. TarraWarra has recently extended its range to elegant barbera, nebbiolo, shiraz and an exemplary roussanne marsanne viognier blend. The 2017 vintage is exceptional across the board. The merlot and rosé are also among the best money can buy."

Qwine "Delicious density has me licking my lips. Delightful drinking really. Dark plums and earthy goodness make a move early. Strawberries and dried herbs tuck in behind with a subtle nudge of cloves. Some chocolate can be seen too. A touch of red apple acidity and fine spices run long on a persistent finish."

Halliday Wine Companion “An elegant iteration of light, but very well balanced, Fragrant with so many spices, plus some toasty cedary oak too. A flush of ripe fruit works across the more medium-bodied palate offering a combo of rhubarb, cherries and pips plus chinotto tang. The tannins have some give and it's refreshing to the very last drop."

Wine Enthusiast "The Flagship wine from Tarrawarra Estate"

Stuart Knox, The Real Review "Cola, redcurrants and dry herb aromatics.....palate of red fruits and undergrowth notes."

The Winemaker “...characterised by vibrancy and opulence....lifted raspberry aromas, with a hint of earthiness and subtle oak. The flavours combine full fruit with fine long tannins, finishing with the elegance and finesse that is the hallmark of TarraWarra Pinot Noir. MV6, 114, 115 and D5V12 clones, hand-picked, chilled overnight, destemmed, twice-daily pump-overs, matured in French oak (10% new) for 10 months.

The Winemaker "The Estate range is grown and made with the same approach as the Reserve wines, are all handpicked and made with a focus on varietal expression.”

TarraWarra Estate has some of the Yarra Valley's oldest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, the estate is one of the region's foremost wineries. Located in one of Australia's best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir growing regions, Yarra Valley. Tarrawarra Estate is estate is rated by top Australian wine critic, James Halliday as “one of the top-tier wineries in the Yarra Valley”. It is best known for its exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Established in 1983 by Marc Besen and wife Eva Besen, the 400-hectare TarraWarra is rated by James Halliday as “one of the top-tier wineries in the Yarra Valley”. TarraWarra Estate is best known for its exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The Yarra Valley is a well-respected Australian wine region which occupies the eastern half of the Port Phillip viticultural zone in the diminutive state of Victoria. At complete odds with the usual, hot and dry Shiraz-growing image of Australia, Yarra Valley is best known for its bright, complex wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Pinot Noir is the dominant red wine grape of Burgundy, now produced in wine regions all over the world, including western Germany, northern Italy, Chile, South Africa, Australia and, perhaps most notably, California, Oregon and New Zealand.

The essence of Pinot Noir wine is its aroma of strawberry and cherry (fresh red cherries in lighter wines and stewed black cherries in weightier examples), underpinned in the most complex examples by hints of forest floor. Well-built Pinot Noirs, particularly from warmer harvests, also exhibit notes of leather and violets, sometimes approaching the flavor spectrum of Syrah.

People Choice Award 2023

Trophy - Best Riesling Winewise Championship 2023
Gold - Clare Valley Wine Show 2022
Gold - Langton's Clare Valley Regional Wine Show (2021 vintage)

Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot ""If there is a better Riesling made in Australia this decade, I want to know about it. This is so close to perfect, it deserves full points but I think it might just get even better and I need the wiggle room.""

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit ""An exceptional offering; the delicately lifted bouquet shows lemon pith, lime sorbet, white floral and wet limestone nuances, leading to an impressively concentrated palate displaying linear mouthfeel backed by firm acidity. Exquisite and pure, delivering outstanding line and length.""

Aaron Brasher, The Real Review ""Pale straw, bright and really youthful in the glass. Fragrant, pretty and lifted aromas of lemon pith, bath salts, citrus blossom and wet slate. Fine, delicate and pointed on the palate, mouth-wateringly citrusy, juicy, mineral, pithy with lip-smackingly crunchy acidity. This is a class act and has a long life ahead of it. ""

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate ""...a product of the excellent 2022 season that birthed it. The Merle is traditionally a structural and streamlined wine, and this vintage iteration continues the established theme. Lithe, almost muscular and loaded with juicy acidity, this wine, in this year, deserves to be put down for a while. With pureness, strength, fruit power, coiled, springy acidity and length for days, this is sensational Riesling.""

Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front ""The purity of this is quite something. It’s more than that of course, it has a semblance of texture, and lots of length, and enough spread to the flavour profile to keep it from seeming simple. It also has some X factor, or something difficult to describe, which just makes you feel in the most confident and reassuring of hands. But the purity, well, it gets you in the feels, it’s the land and the vines in an embrace so tight they seem as one, like the sound of the sea inside a shell. Clare Valley Riesling. More than a cliche. Twist the top and you’re there.""

James Suckling ""This is still extremely youthful, the nose pure lemon sherbet in the first moment, but slowly revealing a wide spectrum of citrus notes, including lemon blossom. Very racy and tightly wound on the concentrated and sleek palate. You need to like acidity to fully appreciate the samurai sword-like finish at this early stage in its life. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. ""

Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion ""The Merle commands attention at the apex of 'reserve' Clare Valley riesling styles. This is no slouch. It's complex and potent, precise and exceptional in its carriage of flavour and the detail within. It's very aromatic, redolent of fresh lime, green apple, ozone, ginger, jasmine and thyme. Flavours are similar but set within a very fresh feeling, chalky textured rapier thrust of tart lime, pink grapefruit and tangerine fruitiness, offset with very minerally, briny tang. An epic wine.""

Trophy - Best Riesling Winewise Championship 2023 ""The lime blossom fragrance of Clare is clearly evident, and the palate is intense and long, yet delicate, built around a line of pronounced acidity that guarantees a long cellaring life. World-class dry riesling.""

Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot ""Terrific intensity here, incredible length and perfect structure. This wine offers more chalky soil notes (or at least, that is what it appears to do), along with those beautiful fresh lime characters. This is a stunning Riesling. The flavours explode across the palate. It has a life of twenty years ahead of it and many more, if you can be that patient. If there is a better Riesling made in Australia this decade, I want to know about it.” (2021 vintage)

James Suckling ""This has very intense aromas of lime and wet slate with some sweeter florals, as well as white nectarine. So fresh. The palate has intensity and drive, with the same fresh lime and white-nectarine flavors. Very long and vivid."" (2021 vintage)

Aaron Brasher, The Real Review ""Pale straw, green tints, really youthful in the glass. Aromas of lime leaf, jasmine, feijoa, just-ripe white stone fruit and grapefruit pith. Racy, fine, focused and concentrated on the palate. Lashings of zesty citrus, green melon, brown lime, talc and minerally wet-stone. A touch of grip adds to the mouth-feel and adds texture and length. A very complete riesling ."" (2021 vintage)

Mike Bennie, The Wine Front ""An imperial standard, of sorts! Lemongrass, lime cordial, green apples. Huzzah! A touch of blackcurrant too? Perhaps. Attractive, varietal scents. Zingy and energetic to taste, compact, bracing with its core of steely, lemon juice acidity. Pent up, powerful, tight and very long. Bone dry. Excellent, classic expression. A Very Good Example."" (2021 vintage)

Decanter ""Already established in the wine industry, in 1984 the Pike family pooled resources to purchase its first 27ha. The Merle is named after the family matriarch, in tribute to their history and tradition. The highly regarded 2021 release is made from just three blocks among the best parcels of their own vineyards in the Polish Hill River estate. Justin Knock MW: Super-precise, steely and pinpoint, salivating, refreshing, lime juice, wet rocks, slippery thirsty acidity. Really lovely balance and finesse. Roger Jones: Gentle, spiced honeycomb, fresh yellow florals, clean and pure, touch of wet stone, delicate jasmine, clementine citrus peel. A wine to age, with great character, depth and woven citrus-curd acidity. Julia Sewell: Candied lemon peel, green mango and green pear aromas. Punchy and powerful, this holds nothing back, yet is balanced across all elements. With a seamless and strikingly juicy palate, a hint of something tropical adds an exotic element."" (2021 vintage)

Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion ""The nose here is littered with characters that take some time to unpick: green pineapple, green and red apple skins, white peach, lemon zest, lime flesh and beeswax. Layers of white pepper, crushed chalk and hints of garden mint round this out. It's incredibly detailed and interesting, not to mention long."" (2021 vintage)

James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion ""...luscious, but that's the impact of this wine. It's citrus focused, of course, and it also has keynote acidity, but it's the honeyed mouthfeel and flavour that hits the jackpot."" (2020 vintage)

Huon Hooke, The Real Review ""Pale straw colour. Very fresh, youthful, restrained and subtle on the nose. Lemon juice and subtle herbs. The palate is juicy, the faintest trace of sweetness balancing the vibrant acidity. Dried herbs and dried flowers. Still slightly yeasty. Rapier-like acidity. Lean, nervy and tight, demanding time and patience. Potential-plus."" (2020 vintage)

James Suckling ""A very fine, fresh and focused riesling, as is the style of Merle. The nose has intense lime and flint aromas with attractive wet-stone and spice notes. The palate is cleverly pitched and poised with a long stream of unwavering lime flavor."" (2020 vintage)

Pikes is a prestigious winery in South Australia's Clare Valley, established in 1984 by Neil and Andrew Pike, whose viticultural roots go back to the late 1800s. Situated in the picturesque Clare Valley, the Estate is comprised of approximately 100 hectares of rolling slopes in Polish Hill River, an eastern sub-region of the Clare Valley.
Known for its cool climate and diverse grape varieties, Pikes showcases premium wines with distinct characters and flavors due to the unique terroir and altitude.

After an almost 20-year career with Penfolds Wines and Southcorp Wine Group, Andrew joined Pikes on a full-time basis in 1998 to oversee viticultural operations and manage the growing family business.

Pikes is particularly renowned for its high-quality Riesling and other cool-climate wines, praised for vibrant acidity, citrus flavors, and exceptional aging potential. Whilst they are best known for world-class Riesling, they have been growing Shiraz and Cabernet for 35 years and have 20 different grape varieties planted on their estate, producing a wide range of wine styles to suit all tastes.

Pikes pride themselves on producing quality handcrafted wines, that reflect vintage, variety, and region. The Pike family has been producing quality wine, beer, and aerated waters in South Australia since 1886 it is a family tradition of which they should be very proud.

Their vineyards in Clare Valley grow various grape varieties, with a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture and environmental responsibility.

Their portfolio includes Riesling, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and unique blends, all crafted with a dedication to quality and craftsmanship. Over the years, Pikes has garnered numerous awards, establishing itself as a top producer in the Clare Valley, and gaining recognition both nationally and internationally for their excellent and consistent wines.

Riesling is a light-skinned, aromatic grape of German origin which is – if the majority of top wine critics are to be believed – the world's finest white wine grape variety. The Riesling vine holds a very different place in the wine world to such great grapes as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Chardonnay. While these immensely popular varieties have conquered every corner of the winegrowing world, Riesling is conspicuously absent from the core wine regions of France, Spain and Italy. Riesling's home is the regions that trace the middle Rhine and the lower Mosel, two of Europe's great wine rivers.

1 x Clos des Centenaires Grenache Vielles Vignes (Old Vines) Red 2019 - Southern Rhône, France

The Winemaker "Notes of raspberry, sweet spices and dry flowers. The palate is round and soft with a full bodied and smooth finish."

100% Grenache

Clos des Centenaires was founded Luc Baudet of Chateau Mas-Neuf fame, and Californian wine industry veteran, Jack Edwards who both share a passion for artisan wines and the terroir of France’s Southern Rhone.

Clos des Centenaires is a historic vineyard situated in Costieres de Nimes, close to the Mediterranean Sea. The vineyard boasts 70-year-old Grenache vines which are deeply rooted in the pebble stones overlooking the picturesque lakes of Petite Camargue. The vineyard also features Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot, and Cinsault, and is known for producing unique, high-end, elegant wines of excellent value.

The vineyard soils are cultivated amongst natural grassland using shallow tillage methods and special attention is paid to the revitalization of vines (using annually prepared biodynamic compost). Inputs are limited to organically approved natural products.

Costieres de Nimes is the most southerly appellation of the Rhone wine region in southeastern France. The wines of the area are reputed to have been consumed by the Ancient Greeks and thus figure among the oldest known wines in the world. The Costieres de Nimes AOC covers an area between the towns of Nimes and Arles.

The Rhone Valley is one of France's key wine regions, and is divided neatly by a gap of about 25 miles (40km). Wines from the northern part of the valley tend to be Syrah-dominant (Hermitage and Cote Rotie being the most notable examples), while wines from the southern Rhone are more commonly blends, with Grenache playing a more dominant role. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous example of a southern Rhone blend, but similar blends are found in wines from Gigondas, Vacqueyras and the regional Cotes du Rhone title.

Grenache is a red-wine grape grown extensively in France, Spain, Australia and the United States and is one of the most widely distributed grapes in the world. Grenache is the French name for the grape, but it has a number of synonyms. In Spain, where it is one of the country's flagship varieties, it is known as Garnacha, and on the island of Sardinia it has been known for centuries as Cannonau. In France, Grenache is most widely planted in the southern Rhone Valley and throughout both Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon. It is most commonly found alongside Syrah and Mourvedre in the classic Southern Rhone Blend (notably in Cotes du Rhone wines), and is the main grape variety in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
