The palate has a nice slosh to it, a generosity though it retains a sense of freshness and gluggability. Not so complex, but kind of compelling as it shows off a distinct array of flavour and scents, all of great appeal. Charming stuff, is the sense."

Pikes is a prestigious winery in South Australia's Clare Valley, established in 1984 by Neil and Andrew Pike, whose viticultural roots go back to the late 1800s. Situated in the picturesque Clare Valley, the Estate is comprised of approximately 100 hectares of rolling slopes in Polish Hill River, an eastern sub-region of the Clare Valley.
Known for its cool climate and diverse grape varieties, Pikes showcases premium wines with distinct characters and flavors due to the unique terroir and altitude.

After an almost 20-year career with Penfolds Wines and Southcorp Wine Group, Andrew joined Pikes on a full-time basis in 1998 to oversee viticultural operations and manage the growing family business.

Pikes is particularly renowned for its high-quality Riesling and other cool-climate wines, praised for vibrant acidity, citrus flavors, and exceptional aging potential. Whilst they are best known for world-class Riesling, they have been growing Shiraz and Cabernet for 35 years and have 20 different grape varieties planted on their estate, producing a wide range of wine styles to suit all tastes.

Pikes pride themselves on producing quality handcrafted wines, that reflect vintage, variety, and region. The Pike family has been producing quality wine, beer, and aerated waters in South Australia since 1886 it is a family tradition of which they should be very proud.

Tempranillo is a red grape variety grown throughout Spain and Portugal and to a lesser degree in other parts of the world. Tempranillo produces red wines with red fruit and leather aromas, high tannins, moderate to low acidity, and moderate alcohol. In 2020, Tempranillo was the third most-planted grape variety in the world, with the majority of plantings in the Iberian Peninsula.

The Great Southern is emerging as a wine region of international significance and reputation. It is the largest wine growing region in Australia and is the second largest producer of grapes in Western Australia. It is a landscape of forested cliffs and resplendent mountain ranges, grazing pastures and towns steeped in history. The regional climate ranges from the coastal, maritime subregions of Albany and Denmark to the inland, continental subregions of Mount Barker, Porongurup and Frankland River. The predominant soils are similar to those of the Margaret River region - either lateritic gravelly sandy loams (marri country) or sandy loams deriving directly from granite and gneissic bedrocks. Near perfect conditions for grape growing has lured some of the most creative and talented winemakers to call this land their home and become part of its ancient story.

The region is known for commitment to be sustainable, and organic, and is attracting some of Australia’s best winemakers. James Halliday "Kilikanoon has travelled in the fast lane since winemaker Kevin Mitchell established it in 1997 on the foundation of 6ha of vines he owned with father Mort. With the aid of investors, its 100 000 dozen production comes from 120ha of estate-owned vineyards. A major restructure has been completed with the acquisition of the winery that it had hitherto leased, along with the ownership of the 16.35ha Mount Surmon vineyard. This very substantial business in the Clare Valley produces 85% red wines, with a further focus on grenache. Kilikanoon accounts for over 35% of the region’s production of this variety."

The Riebke always represents solid value and this release is no different, with oodles of deep blackberry, black cherry and dark plum fruits laden with baking spices, black licorice, dark chocolate and earth. There is a fine, sandy tannin frame, super-ripe unctuous black fruits and plenty more to like."

Gabrielly Poy, The Real Review "Blackberry compote with some red berry highlights take the lead on the nose. On the palate a savoury twist tempers the fruit bringing balance to the plush fruit. The fruit holds freshness and the oak component has been well-judged. This is an approachable full-bodied red that offers a broad appeal."

Teusnér's "The Riebke" Shiraz has been praised by both the wine press and wine drinkers in recent years for consistently over-delivering on quality at an unbeatable price. The wine's name is a tip of the hat to the Riebke family, who produce some of the best grapes in the Ebenezer district. Teusner takes a lot of fruit from the old Riebke vineyards in north Barossa around Ebenezer, Kalimna, and Moppa.
