"Organic Winery of the Year" - NZ Organic Wine Awards
Cameron Douglas MS "Varietal and pure fruited bouquet with scents of fresh green pear and crisp red apple, there’s a saline mineral quality with an oyster shell and stony soil quality. Floral, youthful and bright. Equally engaging on the palate with flavours of white spice and white fleshed fruits then mineral. The texture is fine and satin-like with contrasting acidity and core fruit flavours. Balanced, taut, youthful and well made."
Michael Dearth "The light sweetness expressed by a fantastic Pinot Gris pairs perfectly with fresh, flavoursome summer-like dishes. Try it alongside a simple fish crudo or sashimi dish - specifically Kahawai or Tarakihi - for my favourite summertime meal."
Winery Notes "A wide picking window allowed us to pick some fruit early which presented a juicy and crunchy pear/red apple profile showing minerality coupled with bright acidity. A later pick saw concentrated poached pear with a touch of ginger and spice from a portion of barrel fermentation to add depth of flavour. A beautifully pure yet complex pinot gris."
Grapes were gently pressed and settled overnight before racking into a combination of fermentation vessels with 25% fermented naturally in large oak barrels. The wine was then aged on light fluffy lees for 4 months to incorporate a textural element to the wine.
Bob Campbell MW "Pure, pristine pinot gris with ripe tree fruit, apple and pear flavours, together with a seasoning of ginger from yeast lees contact. Silken-textured wine with just a hint of sweetness balanced by gentle acidity. An attractive wine made with a light touch." (2017 vintage)
Bob Campbell MW "A smooth-textured wine with weight and an appealing mouth-feel...Dry pinot gris, with plenty of yeast lees character giving a baked bread, brioche character to the wine. Apple and pear fruit flavours are also evident." (2016 vintage)
Cameron Douglas - Master Sommelier "Fresh, crisp, balanced and well made......Generous, lush and fruity bouquet with aromas of fresh pear and apple, some quince and peach then a layer of silty mineral earthy qualities and a light white spice. On the palate - just dry with some light sweetness, a core of ripe fruit and medium+ acidity adding crunch and freshness. " (2016 vintage)
Deborah Parker Wong ~ The Tasting Panel Magazine "Just as Marlborough is synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc, Central Otago, the extreme wine-growing region at the southern end of the island's higher altitude sites, mica- and schist-based soils combined with a continental climate and short growing season result in Chardonnay and Pinot Gris with intense purity, and fragrant, spicy Pinot Noir." (2016 vintage)
Amisfield was established in 1988, and has built a reputation for quality wines, especially Pinot Noir. Their state-of-the-art purpose built winery is the focal point of the vineyard, and gathered global attention when visited by Will and Kate on their Royal tour of New Zealand.
Established in Central Otago, Amisfield produces beautiful pinot noir and aromatic white wines sourced from fruit grown on its Estate vineyard beneath the Pisa mountain range in the Cromwell Basin. Over 80ha is currently planted, and the majority of the vines are over ten years old. Amisfield philosophy is simple: minimal intervention in the winemaking process and ultimate fruit purity.
Amisfield is currently in conversion to full organic certification with New Zealand’s leading body, BioGro.
Pinot Gris is a white-wine grape originally from the vineyards of Burgundy. It is now found in wine regions all over the world. For wines in the pale, light style, the variety is typically referred to by the Italian name Pinot Grigio.
Pinot Gris is grown throughout New Zealand. The Pinot Gris NZ style is more in line with Alsace than an Italian Pinot Grigio. Expect aromas of apple, pear, honeysuckle, spice and bread notes.
