‘SMALL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR’ ~ The West Australian Wine Guide 2010 ‘SMALL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR’ ~ The West Australian Wine , Guide 2009
Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion "Hand picked, whole-bunch pressed, fermented in a combination of seasoned and new French oak. Toasty, chewy and packed with layers of flavour and texture. The saline acid ties it all to a post, the concentrated fruit forms a deep pool of flavour on the tongue. There's a lot to ponder, a lot to like, and thankfully, a whole bottle to drink. Get to it."
Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Very light-straw colour. The aroma is reserved and a bit shy, with a faint floral overtone, while the palate is light but reasonably intense, straightforward and tickled up with a trace of sweetness. A pleasant wine."
James Halliday Wine Companion "Hand-picked, chilled, whole-bunch pressed, fermented in new and 1yo French barriques. This has good mouthfeel and varietal expression, the oak surprisingly well behaved. It is still youthful, with room to grow and prosper." (2018 vintage)
Steven Creber, Halliday Wine Companion "Opens with plenty of winemaking 'funk' on the bouquet (struck match, cashew, toast), but there's a core of quality grapefruit, melon and peach varietal character as well. Generous in flavour, combining all those elements found in the bouquet, it has an attractive viscosity of mouthfeel with fresh acidity keeping things taut and controlled on the palate. Well made." (2017 vintage)
Nick Buttler, The Real Review "Grapefruits and charry oak - vanilla custard rounds out the bouquet. A lovely, creamy palate - lees work is evident, partial MLF (malolactic fermentation) wouldn't surprise - artifice done well. A generous wine that retains poise, complex enough, the grapefruit acid line leaves a hint of bitterness that demands the next sip." (2017 vintage)
Ned Goodwin MW, Halliday Wine Companion "A wine that glimpses the current zeitgeist of mineral-clad, tauter expressions of chardonnay, while also paying heed to the proclivity of Margaret River for generosity and texture. Honeydew melon and quince leap out of the blocks, while a juicy kernel of cashew, brulee and nougat set the pace for stone fruit notes and a generous lick of medium toasted French oak, toning the palate." (2016 vintage)
The Western Australian Wine Guide 2018 "Brown Hill Estate is small family-run southern Margaret River producer has gone from strength to strength with a range of exceptional quality and value-for-money wines. The vines are all dry grown and on quite harsh gravelly soils, resulting in small yields. All grapes are hand-picked. The reds are put into a high percentage of new American and French oak. Great value and super wines."
Brown Hill Estate is a family run, multi-award winning Margaret River winery focussed on single vineyards. It utilizes traditional methods of handpicking and hand sorting to get the best quality from its grapes, and French coopered barrels in production.
Margaret River is one of the best-known wine regions in Australia, recognized internationally for the quality of its wines and the natural beauty of the region. Although originally renowned for its unusually refined Cabernet Sauvignon and intensely citrusy chardonnay varieties, the region now produces Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends and Shiraz.
Located in the south-western corner of Western Australia, it is famous for having a more 'European' wine style than its counterparts across Australia, owing to the regions temperate, coastal location which is very similar to that of Bordeaux.
Chardonnay is one of the world’s most popular grapes, Chardonnay is made in a wide range of styles from lean, to rich, creamy white wines aged in oak. Bolder, richer, full-bodied and buttery Chardonnays are made using oak and are produced in California, Burgundy, and Australia. Unoaked chardonnays such as Chablis and those produced in Chile, New Zealand, and other parts of France are leaner and often crisp and mineraly, with delicate flavors. By law, if a label says “Chablis,” it must be Chardonnay.
1 x Lawson's Dry Hills "Ten Rocks" Sauvignon Blanc 2022 - Marlborough, New Zealand
4 Star - Silver Medal Raymond Chan
Silver - Mundus Vini (2019 vintage) Silver - New Zealand Wine of the Year (2016 vintage)
Selected by Air New Zealand for the inflight international business class pouring program.
Raymond Chan "Fruit from three sites, in the Lower Wairau, Awatere and Omaka, stainless-steel fermented to 12.8% alc. and 4.4 g/L rs. A small amount of Semillon is included in the blend. Pale straw colour with slight green hues. The nose is full, voluminous and even with fresh, mouthwatering aromas of passionfruit, gooseberries, capsicums and fresh garden herbs. Dry to taste and medium bodied, bright, lively and acid-tinged flavours of passionfruit and gooseberries form a good, deep core. Brisk and crisp acidity lifts the fruit, revealing floral and lime notes. This flows softly and smoothly through the palate, with a near slipperiness, the flavours leading to a soft, nuanced finish. This is a smooth flowing, lively Sauvignon Blanc with a voluminous bouquet of passionfruit and gooseberries. Serve with antipasto, seafood, salads and vegetables over the next "
Winemaker "This wine displays lifted grass and green capsicum aromatics along with lime and passion fruit. The palate is crisp and fresh with strong citrus flavours and a lovely chalky mouthfeel. Good weight, lovely texture and a long finish reflect the great vintage."
100% Sauvignon Blanc
Founded by Ross and Barbara Lawson in 1982, this estate is firmly part of the Marlborough establishment, home to New Zealand’s most famous Sauvignon Blancs.
Ten Rocks is part of the Lawson’s Dry Hills state, with the fruit sourced from three different areas within Marlborough’s Parallel valleys – Lower Wairau and Awatere, as well as Omaka Valley, right in the heart of Marlborough. The grapes were harvested, gently pressed and cool fermented in stainless steel and then blended with a touch of Semillon, with each parcel adding something different to the finished product.
The Sauvignon Blanc taste is one of the most identifiable in the world of white wines for a few reasons. First, it always has crisp, high acidity. Second, it has a chemical compound called pyrazine which gives grassy, herbal or bell pepper flavors. When grown in cooler climates or picked early, the herbaceous green character is most prominent. In warmer climates or allowed to hang longer on the vine, the pyrazine character diminishes in favor of riper fruit flavors ranging from grapefruit, to passion fruit and guava.

New Zealand Wine Rater "Pale in hue and clearly very youthful, restrained and reductive on the nose right now. Showing lemon citrus notes with aromas of chive flowers and some earthy, lees characters. Fresh and lively on the palate with distinctive, crisp acidity. A wine that clearly needs more time to show its best."
Decanter World Wine Awards "Restrained nose displaying gentle aromas of melon, peach, lemon and smoky notes. Finely rendered fruit, quite concentrated, silky and fresh."
Bob Campbell, The Real Review "From Catalina's Sounds of White vineyard in the Waihopai Valley. Tangy, fruit-focused chardonnay with green apple, lime, subtle toast and gingery yeast lees characters. A fresh, crisp wine that promises to age well." (2019 vintage)
New Zealand Wine Rater "A vibrant, youthful, funky wine on the bouquet. Th ere are intense aromas of grapefruit, salted lemon, toast/vanilla oak, with hints of gun-flint, and struck match. The wine is dry, and fleshy with plenty of drive, a grainy, salty texture nicely balanced with salivating acidity, and a strong barrel influence. All bodes well for the wine to further integrate with time." (2019 vintage)
Decanter World Wine Awards "Flinty aromatics suggests a reductive style with pure apple fruit underneath. Lovely silken texture with tangy acidity and decent length." (20019 vintage)
Marlborough based award-winning winery, Catalina Sounds is known for wines which harness the purity and vibrancy of Marlborough’s climate and landscape. Marlborough is by far New Zealand's most important wine region. Situated at the north-eastern tip of the South Island, this dry, sunny region produces around three-quarters of all New Zealand wine. It is particularly famous for its pungent, zesty Sauvignon Blanc - widely considered by critics to be the best Sauvignon currently produced anywhere on the planet. Commercial-scale viticulture began in Marlborough the 1970s – it conquered the world within 25 years!
The aim for our Chardonnay from Sound of White is always quality. Meticulously well managed, clone 95 Chardonnay is grown on clay-loam soils at our Sound of White vineyard in the Waihopai Valley (part of the sought-after Southern Valleys). Shoot-thinning and leafplucking keep the canopy open and fruit hanging freely. Yields are purposely kept low around 6-7 T/Ha to ensure ripe concentration and balance.

Bob Campbell, The Real Review "A field blend of gewürztraminer, pinot gris and riesling co-fermented on the skins to produce a wine with a blush of colour. Gewürztraminer dominates, giving the wine a strong floral/lychee character together with other tree fruit flavours. Intriguing wine with an off-dry finish.
Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Pinot gris, gewürztraminer and sauvignon blanc co-fermented on the grape skins. A blush of colour from skin contact with toffee, floral and spice flavours supported by peppery tannins and gentle acidity." (2021 vintage)
Bob Campbell, The Real Review "A field blend of co-fermented gewürztraminer 63%, pinot gris 32% and chardonnay 3%. Pale orange wine, with a mix of floral and fruit flavours. An attractive dry wine with appealing purity (2019 vintage)
New Zealand Wine Rater "Bright red potato-skin, copper hue. Intensely aro matic with notes of apricot, Turkish delight, lavender and complex sulphides. Dry, and lean with taut acidity. Has plenty of merit and moderate tannins but could do with a bit more concentration." (2019 vintage)

Organic wines are made from grapes grown without pesticides, following strict organic standards. Organic wines are produced in vineyards that do not use synthetic chemicals. Certified organic wines have been certified by BioGro Organic certification in New Zealand.
Highly awarded and acclaimed, wine-maker Alan Peters-Oswald is a specialist premium pinot noir maker. The Central Otago wine region is the world's southern-most commercial wine-growing region, and famous for its Pinot Noir. It differs from all other New Zealand wine areas in that it is inland, in the foothills of the Southern Alps. The level of sunlight is very high, something that accounts for the high levels of alcohol that are often found in Central Otago wines.
Nestled within a timeless and sensual landscape, Nanny Goat Estate Vineyard sits between 270m and 290m above sea level spread across two ancient, North East facing terraces. This is a region of climatic extremes with typically very hot summers, short autumns and bitterly cold winter days. Challenging conditions for producing world-class cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Successive periods of glaciation and recession, followed by erosion by Mata Au / Clutha River have shaped the Nanny Goat Estate landscape by creating distinct terraces of alluvial soils that are pastiche of loess, gravel, schist and mineral quartz. Generations of farming and the associated cultivation of lucerne and other feed crops have added organic matter to the wind blowen loessial topsoil providing us with a nice balance between vine vigor and free draining attributes.

James Halliday 5 Star Winery
The Wine Front "Very Nice Chardonnay....Refreshing for sure. Good detail.... It does struck match and flint, it does citrus and green apple, some spicy oak there, it does a slightly rubbery tightness and a milky haze in texture through glass shard cuts. It’s a wine that feels primped and preened into its style of racy, leaner, taut, rather than reflecting inherent fruit character, but in that way hits its markers and will delight an audience of appreciative drinkers...."
Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion "No single-block wines this vintage, with all fruit allocated to the single-vineyard wines across the range. This has morphed into a more savoury wine with almost a complete absence of fruit flavours, except for a flutter of citrus. It has the sulphide stamp, the restraint yet even tighter with acidity leading. A hint of beeswax, just the finest creamy leesy flavour....don't chill it down too much."
The Real Review "palate is restrained, lean and high-tensioned. Enjoy with food."
The Winemaker "Defined by its fresh, citrus blossom aromatic lift and precise long, lingering finish. Characteristic pure and intense aroma. The palate is poised and complex, with layered fruit flavours. Tightly wound together with a precise minerality, the wine has beautiful line and length."
Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine “Elegant and beautifully balanced.....Opens with spicy cracked black pepper and bright notes of freshly picked blackberries. Plush and open with lovely freshness and vibrancy offering attractive fruit purity and peppery complexity....combines black cherry aromas with oak spices and a subtle touch of whole-bunch fragrance. There’s supple flesh on the palate with plenty of balanced tannin.” (2018 vintage)
The Winemaker "A perfumed and spicy Syrah, medium-bodied in style. The palate is concentrated and silky, with finely structured tannins, bright fruit characters, wonderful elegance and depth. Aged for 11 months in French oak. Stored carefully, this wine will age gracefully for ten years. " (2018 vintage)
Australian Wine Companion "This is another fantastic release under this label. Garden herbs, nuts, twigs and spice notes blend seamlessly with red and black cherries, licorice and wood smoke. Flamboyance is its middle name, but it has the discipline to make the most of it." (2017 vintage)
Yabby Lake Vineyard was established by the Kirby family in 1998 and over the past decade, Yabby Lake has built a reputation for single-vineyard Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of great purity and character.
James Halliday "This high-profile wine business was established by Robert and Mem Kirby (of Village Roadshow), who had been landowners in the Mornington Peninsula for decades. In 1998 they established Yabby Lake Vineyard, under the direction of vineyard manager Keith Harris; the vineyard is on a north-facing slope, capturing maximum sunshine while also receiving sea breezes. The main focus is the 25ha of pinot noir, 14ha of chardonnay and 8ha of pinot gris; 3h of shiraz, merlot and sauvignon blanc take a back seat. The arrival of the hugely talented Tom Carson as Group Winemaker has added lustre to the winery and its wines, making the first Jimmy Watson Trophy-winning Pinot Noir in 2014, and continuing to blitz the Australian wine show circuit with Single Block Pinots."
Led by Tom Carson "one of Australia's most lauded winemakers" so cites Huon Hooke of the Real Review. Under Carson's direction, Yabby Lake's philosophy is to craft wines representative of their site and their season in which they were grown. Yabby Lake believe it’s this attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression.
Huon Hooke "One of Carson’s biggest moments was winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy [Australia's most prestigious winemaker accolade] with his 2012 Block 1 Pinot Noir – the first pinot ever to win this coveted award."
Mornington Peninsula is one of Victoria's most important Australian wine regions, located an hour's drive south of Melbourne on the southern coast of Australia. It is one of Australia's coolest winegrowing regions and produces elegant Chardonnay and internationally award-winning Pinot Noir wines, and gaining a reputation for its quality medium-bodied, peppery shiraz.

"Halliday Wine Companion - Australian Winery of the Year 2022 & 2023"
Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion "The Marsanne was pressed straight to old puncheons, the roussanne spent several hours on skins before being pressed to a single concrete vessel. Matured separately on fine lees for 6 months. This wine has been doing the rounds at wine shows in 2021, and has been picking up golds and favourable comments left, right, and centre. I can tell you why: it harnesses the weight, volume and voluptuousness of the 2 varieties, but re-presents them in a restrained and focused way. The phenolics are ever-present, shapely and balancing. All in all, a class act."
The Wine Front "An organic MR from MR. Love it. Custard cream, pineapple, lemon curd and ginger. A rich feeling but decidedly fresh and uplifting expression of Marsanne Roussanne loaded with spice over all that generous and fruity character. Mellow, flowing, lively and generous with balance in spades. Delightful drinking ensues. Lots of character."
Stuart Knox, The Real Review "Bright lemon yellow in a glass that has a fragrant lift of white peach and honeysuckle aromas. A ripe and generous core of citrus and stone fruits drive the palate with a fine line of salty mineral acidity and hints of smoked spices underneath. Good length and crisp at the finish."
James Suckling "Sliced apples, fresh pears, grapefruits and jasmine on the nose. Some hazelnuts, too. Creamy and layered with a ripe, fleshy yet fresh core of fruit"
Gabrielle Poy, The Real Review "Subtle aromas of earth, honey and lemon make way for a rich core that tails into a fine line of acidity. This feels like a baby, its energetic nucleus needs time to unfurl and build layers. This is an impressive wine with body, flavour and nuance."
Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion "The best examples of this Rhône blend can have a biscuity dryness that offsets the typically rich and opulent fruit characters of both varieties. And so here. Balanced and long, both components are stitched together with a thread of saline acidity." (2020 vintage)
Stuart Knox, The Real Review "Medium straw-yellow hue. Honeysuckle, ripe pears and karkalla aromas. Medium to full on the palate, it has a fleshy core of orchard fruits with a saline minerality wrapping it up. Good acidity keeps it from fattening out too much and a nice peach skin fuzz gives length and dries the finish well ." (2020 vintage)

Founded by one of the pioneers of the Margaret River winemaking region, David Hohnen, and his brother in law, Murray McHenry, an accomplished fine wine retailer. Both have been making wine in Margaret River since the early 1970s. McHenry Hohnen vineyards are 100% biodynamic. Their three unique vineyards (Burnside, Calgardup and Hazel’s) produce wines that are a reflection of the land. McHenry Hohnen focus on crafting site expressive wines and are known for producing some of the region's best wines.
"McHenry Hohnen is tucked away off Bussell Highway to the south of Margaret River. The wines have bound from strength, a comment never truer than under the stewardship of winemaker Jacopo (Japo). Under his leadership, the wines have been catapulted into a new realm of quality. The chardonnays particularly exemplify that hard-to-achieve balance of pleasurable on release, and capable of graceful ageing. The move towards organics and sustainable farming has had a positive impact on the quality of the wines, and it is a delight to witness so much diversity in the vineyards - from experimental clones and new plantings, to sheep, chickens, olives and vegetables. McHenry Hohnen is an estate on the move - divert your eyes at your peril - EL."

54% Gewürztraminer, 30% Pinot Gris,16% Muscat

5 Stars - McHenry Hohen Vintners (2018 vintage) 5-star winery - James Halliday (2018 vintage)

Margaret River is one of the best known wine regions in Australia, recognized internationally for the quality of its wines and the natural beauty of the region. Although originally renowned for its unusually refined cabernet sauvignon and intensely citrusy chardonnay varieties, the region now produces high quality Semillon-Sauvignon blends and Shiraz.
Located in the south-western corner of Western Australia, it is famous for having a more 'European' wine style than its counterparts across Australia, owing to the regions temperate, coastal location which is very similar to that of Bordeaux.
