Ned Goodwin MW, Halliday Wine Companion "A mid-weighted pinot of succulent red fruit and pomegranate accents, grappling fibrous whole-bunch tannins. Mezcal, cardamon and tamarind lathering a twiggy, easygoing finish of some density, sappy intensity and impressive linger." (2021 vintage)

Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Medium depth red with faint purple and brick-red tints; the bouquet is reserved and sweet-cherry lifted, with sweet basil-like herbal hints. The wine is light-medium bodied and lean, but nicely balanced and very quaffable. Attractive flavour and freshness, backed by a little firmness from tannins, wholly appropriate." (2021 vintage)

Australian & New Zealand Boutique Wine Show "Lovely red fruits, great acid and tannin profile." (2021 vintage)

Australian & New Zealand Boutique Wine Show "Light-bodied. Good poise and flavour." (2021 vintage)

James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion "Clear, welcoming hue; a warm bouquet of dark cherries, spice and a background of forest floor, the palate building on the bouquet with a seductive, juicy mix of ripe fruit, discreet tannins and French oak. All in balance, all in harmony." (2020 vintage)

This is a partnership between the Pike family (of Clare Valley fame) and the Joyce family, related to Andrew Pike’s wife, Cathy.

The winery is situated in Lenswood, which is a subregion of the Adelaide Hills. The Adelaide Hills region is well-known for its cool climate, high-altitude vineyards, and diverse range of premium cool-climate wines.

The Joyce family have been orchardists at Lenswood for over 100 years and also have extensive operations in the Riverland. Together with Andrew they have established this vineyard site, which was previously apple and pear orchards, is characterized by steep North and East facing slopes and possesses fantastic gravelly clay and loam soils which are ideally suited to the classic cool climate varieties that have been planted – Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. to sauvignon blanc (5.9ha), pinot noir (5.73ha), pinot gris (3.22ha), chardonnay (3.18ha) and semillon (0.47ha). The wines are made at the Pikes’ Clare Valley winery and exported around the world.

The vineyard is all hand pruned and handpicked with the fruit being chilled overnight in the Joyce cool rooms. Traditional old world techniques as well as modern Australian winemaking are incorporated to produce a style which reflects the variety and region."

Pike & Joyce owns and operates vineyards covering around 32 hectares in the Lenswood area of Adelaide Hills. The vineyards are planted at varying altitudes, providing an excellent opportunity to grow a variety of grape varieties that thrive in the cool climate.

Pinot Noir is the dominant red wine grape of Burgundy, now produced in wine regions all over the world, including western Germany, northern Italy, Chile, South Africa, Australia and, perhaps most notably, California, Oregon and New Zealand.

Well-built Pinot Noirs, particularly from warmer harvests, also exhibit notes of leather and violets, sometimes approaching the flavor spectrum of Syrah.

"Organic Winery of the Year" - NZ Organic Wine Awards

Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Concentrated wine with ripe cherry, plum and raspberry flavours together with nuances of floral and fresh herb flavours supported by moderately assertive tannins. Accessible now and with the potential for bottle development."

Cameron Douglas MS "Many classic attributes greet the nose for this Otago Pinot Noir with a bouquet of ripe and richness, there’s no mistaking the variety with dark cherry skin and black currant, a savoury dried herb quality and layers of barrel spices and some toasty wood smoke qualities. Ripe, firm, dry and complex as the wine touches the palate, flavours of wood smoke and black currant, thyme, rosemary and wild dried herbs. Tannins deliver a firm coarse chalky mouthfeel while acidity layers in back bone and squeeze. A wine of complexity and charm, a wine also of youth needing cellar time to harmonise and integrate completely."

Cameron Douglas MS "Distinctive, varietal, earthy and mineral with a line of new French oak spice and barrel toast. Aromas and flavours include a classic Otago savouriness with bracken and crumbled stone outlined by dark cherry and fresh raspberry flesh, plum and then baking spices of vanilla and clove. Tannins add structure and plenty of mouthfeel as does the acidity." (2020 vintage)

QWine "Organically farmed, there is plenty of depth but it's not weighty. Slick and silky, dark plums and dark cherries and flanked by pan juices, dancy delicate spices and some mushroom compost. An earthiness cruises through the mid-palate adding another level of interest before grippy, drying cocoa tannins ride out to a sustained finish. I'll have a glass thanks. No, make it two. Smart gear." (2020 vintage)

Michael Cooper "Concentrated richness and mushroom-like earthiness – juicy and succulent in the palate with cherry sweetness, a sultry savouriness, a touch of chocolate and fruit cake spices – very attractive and generous. (2020 vintage)

Bob Campbell MW "Luscious, concentrated pinot noir with a mix of floral, plum, dark cherry, cassis and spicy flavours. Dense, silken-textured wine with an unmistakable Central Otago signature. A heady wine that is delicious now but no rush." (2019 vintage)

Cameron Douglas MS "Tense, ripe, varietal and loaded with primary fruit and mineral energy. Bright red and dark cherry, raspberry and redcurrant. Baking spices of oak with a vanilla and cedar suggestion, a whisper of bacon then a quiet wood smoke moment. Quite powerful and youthful on the palate with fruit flavours that reflect the nose, an abundance of tannins and acidity add texture and energy. Lengthy finish with a primary, fruit centric power and contrasting wood and acid structure. Plenty of minerality this wine needs more cellar to really showcase its personality and pinosity." (2019 vintage)

James Suckling "Rich spiced-cherry and fresh red-plum nose with raspberries, violets and smoked-meat elements. The palate has vibrant plum flavor and a smooth sheen of fine, velvety tannin. Fresh and balanced." (2019 vintage)

Bob Campbell MW "Bright, youthful pinot noir with red rose, floral, dark cherry, anise, dried herb, thyme and spicy oak flavours supported by peppery tannins. An elegant wine with obvious cellaring potential" (2018 vintage)

Cam Douglas "Ruby and purple core with a purple rim, bright and shiny appearance. Very youthful bouquet with primary fruit aromas of plums and cherries, moderate intensity scents of oak, fleshy, young, savoury, pretty and inviting. On the palate - Dry, fresh, savoury and textured with a mix of fine to firm tannins, plenty of acidity and a core of fruit. All the raw energy of this wine is on show and needs time to settle in more and begin to harmonise - this is best completed in a cool dark cellar. This wine is also fresh, lively, packed with pinosity and charm and will reward those who decant for service or better still age a little longer with best drinking from later in 2021 through 2026." (2018 vintage)

Amisfield was established in 1988 and has built up a reputation for quality wines, especially Pinot Noir. Their state-of-the-art purpose built winery is the focal point of the vineyard, and gathered global attention when visited by Will and Kate on their Royal tour of New Zealand.

Over 80ha is currently planted, and the majority of the vines are over ten years old. Amisfield philosophy is simple: minimal intervention in the winemaking process and ultimate fruit purity.

Amisfield is currently in conversion to full organic certification with New Zealand’s leading body, BioGro.

Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion "Juicy, bright, vivacious red wine with sour-sweet cherry characters, smoky spice elements, touches of dried herb, some truffle and fig/date notes in the mix – bouquet and palate in tandem here. The texture is supple upfront, then finishes with some twiggy, slightly bitter elements to the tannin profile, soft as it may be. "

James Suckling "This is a delicious first cab in a hierarchy of pinot. Classy and the equal, on many levels, of Pike & Joyce's single clonal expressions. Lifted aromas of ripe strawberries, poached rhubarb and griotte, that most Burgundian accent seldom found in pinot from these parts. The palate is expansive, bound to a gentle tannic twine. Just a bit thin. But that is drawing needles from the proverbial. An impressive, open-fronted wine offering great satisfaction." (2022 vintage)

Ned Goodwin MW, Halliday Wine Companion "This is a delicious first cab from the rank in a hierarchy of pinot. Classy and the equal, on many levels, of Pike & Joyce's single clonal expressions. Lifted scents of fecund strawberry, poached rhubarb and griotte, that most burgundian accent seldom found in pinot on these shores. The palate is expansive, bound to a gentle tannic twine. Just a bit thin. But that is drawing needles from the proverbial. An impressive, open-fronted wine offering great satisfaction." (2022 vintage)

Stuart Knox, The Real Review "Light ruby red colour. Fragrant raspberry, rose petal and clove aromatics. Light bodied with bright and sweet red berry fruits at the core. Some clove and cinnamon spice notes adding interest and it runs with supple softness to a medium length finish." (2022 vintage)

Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion "Juicy fruit with a high liveliness quotient, this young Adelaide Hills pinot noir will undoubtedly be enjoyed sooner rather than later. Boasts a fine, linear tannin structure, the perfect launch pad for a volley of ripe red berries, plums, leafy dried herbs and earth. Clean and fresh but also with depth, which will become more apparent with age." (2021 vintage)

Huon Hooke, The Real Review "Medium depth bright red-purple colour; sweet raspberry to red cherry aromas, a hint of sarsaparilla, the palate light-bodied and straightforward, with a short carry and modest depth. A pleasant lighter, simpler style of pinot and the price is right." (2021 vintage)

Australian & New Zealand Boutique Wine Show "Light-bodied. Elegant and refined. Lovely poise. Fine." (2021 vintage)

Australian & New Zealand Boutique Wine Show "Bright lifted vibrant. Juicy fruit clear/clean and precise." (2021 vintage)

Tony Love, Halliday Wine Companion "All estate-grown fruit, with 5 clones in play. Wild fermented in more than 40 small parcels, with varying vinification including whole bunches, whole berries and a range of maceration times. All matured in 25% new barriques for 8 months. We get darker cherry fruit notes, concentration and integrated secondary characters, peppery spice and well-woven wood. Everything is in place, but it wants for just a little more edge." (2020 vintage)

Handcrafted micro-winery

Andrew Graham “This In Dreams Pinot Noir 2021 is exactly what a reasonably affordable Pinot should be too – bright, light, and driven by lucid red fruit with just a lick of oak. Anthony Fikkers sure knows how to deliver restraint and delicacy. Gentle, generous enough and vibrant drinking – the In Dreams Pinot’s got ‘bottle emptying’ all over it "."

Campbell Mattinson "It gets the balance right between elegance/finesse and having enough flesh to satisfy. It just feels right. Strawberry and stewed cherry flavours with sweet spice, woodsmoke and (modest) deli meat. It’s lifted and perfumed, especially once it’s had a chance to breathe, and its fine-grained tannin too has been managed to perfection. So it sucks you straight in but it then has the structure and form to impress beyond the immediate."

Philip Rich "A light brick red. Cranberries and red fruits together with dried strawberries and a gentle sage-like herbal fragrance. A lighter-framed wine with bright, crunchy acidity and fine tannins." (2020 vintage)

Jane Faulkner "Maraschino cherries, stewed rhubarb dotted with anise and dried herbs. It's not a big wine, even if the tannins are a little chewy and grippy, as there's bright acidity keeping it afloat." (2019 vintage)

The Winemaker "On the nose there’s plums, wild strawberry, bramble bush and a hint of graphite from the whole bunch - all with an underlying character of freshly turned earth. Good concentration on the front palate, with focused drive through to the finish; the stalk influence knits the palate into a silky, seamless journey. Flavours of wild raspberry and a lick of sweet flinty oak."

James Halliday "A very good pinot that has taken what the vintage offered with both hands. Bright hue; the palate has whole bunch subtitles woven through from start to finish, giving the wine a fluid line, not the stop-start nature of some whole bunch treatment." (2017 vintage)

The Wine Front "Wheaty, spicy, a little smoky and firm in structure, brooding even. Red fruits, light chalky texture, bony but flavoursome, drives through the mouth and finishes dry and long. Savoury style, and quite serious, yet fun to drink." (2017 vintage)

Toni Paterson "Liqueur cherry aromatics with a thread of herb. Ripe flavours with very bright acidity. Very good depth and the flavours fan out on the finish. Needs a lot of air to show its true colours" (2017 vintage)

Huon Hooke "Medium red colour with the faintest purple tinge. The bouquet is foresty and fusty with dried herb, dried flower aromas and suggestions of whole-bunch ferment. The wine is tight and nervy on the palate, bright and piercing, with light but firm tannins." (2017 vintage)

Campbell Mattinson "Everything is in excellent order....Bright and brooding at once. Strawberries and cherries, a stewy character, integrated spice, lipstick, an all-round firmness. It’s light in colour but there’s real power here." (2016 vintage)

James Halliday "This is a very attractive pinot, made with exceptional attention to detail." (2015 vintage)

Sens Wine "The palate is inviting and pretty, with integrated fruit and silky oak tannins supporting vibrant fruit flavours and earthy spice....full of bright brambly fruits and red currents, followed by more complex savoury undernotes of sautéed mushrooms. The acidity in this wine balances the palate and suggests this wine will age well for up to 8 years." (2015 vintage)

James Halliday "Outstanding winery capable of producing wines of very high quality"

Swiss-born head winemaker, Nina Stocker is the daughter of eminent wine scientist Dr John Stocker. Nina was born and raised in a small town on the border of the Alsace wine region in Switzerland and it was her family’s involvement in the local village vineyard which paved the way for her future career as a Winemaker.

Nina has worked vintages in McLaren Vale, Yarra Valley, Barolo (Italy), Rhone Valley (France), Alentejo (Portugal), and New Zealand.

In Dreams have won medals for both their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In Dreams source their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from three low yieldings, premium quality vineyards. The vineyards are predominantly from the upper Yarra Valley due to the cooler microclimate that helps them capture the elegance and finesse of this noble variety.

In Dreams are focused on allowing the vineyards to express themselves in the resulting wines using traditional winemaking techniques such as small-batch fermentation, wild yeast and the delicate use of French oak.

The Yarra Valley is a well-respected Australian wine region which occupies the eastern half of the Port Phillip viticultural zone in the diminutive state of Victoria. At complete odds with the usual, hot and dry Shiraz-growing image of Australia, Yarra Valley is best known for its bright, complex wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Campbell Mattinson, The Real Review "Most of the grapes are from a 16-year-old hillside vineyard, with a small amount from five year-old vines on the flat. Quite a dense, rich and fleshy red with floral, violet, dark cherry and plum supported by gentle tannins. "

Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot "This Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is a good illustration of why Marlborough is a hugely underrated region for pinot. It’s got everything fans of this variety are searching for – perfumed aromas and sweet red fruits with a dark, earthy underbelly. Mid to deep cherry in colour, fruits are fleshy and generous. Cherry compote, damp earth and spice with toasty oak in play. The palate is then juicy and savoury – meaty, ground spice flavours over a bed of dark cherry fruits. It’s on the oaky side for pinot noir so best matched up with flavoursome dishes such as coq au vin."

QWine "Dark cherry, blackcurrants, mushrooms, even a hint of truffle get things on the move. A drying Pinot but there's a lighter side to it. Easy drinking, you'd kick back with this riverside watching the worries of the world float by. "

New Zealand Wine Rater "A very youthful, primary, un-evolved wine right no w, that's deep purple in hue, and somewhat subdued on the nose. As it opens with air time there's lots of chary oak, and blueberry fruit with a hint of cinnamon, and mace. Perhaps more Syrah-like than Pinot right now. Closed, primary with acid, and tannin dominating on the palate. Difficult to evaluate right now and begging for more time."

Campbell Mattinson, The Real Review "Well made, classical Marlborough pinot noir with typical red fruits, dried herb and subtle earthy-savoury flavours. A medium-bodied red, with a core of sweet fruit balanced against fine, drying tannins." (2017 vintage)

Decanter World Wine Awards "Juicy, open, floral, lifted and aromatic with great purity and hints of cherries, pencil shavings and oak-derived spice. Well-made with a persistent finish." (2017 vintage)

Marlborough based award-winning winery, Catalina Sounds is known for wines which harness the purity and vibrancy of Marlborough’s climate and landscape. The name Catalina Sounds evolved from the majestic Catalina flying boats that played a vital role across the South Pacific during and after World War II.

Marlborough is by far New Zealand's most important wine region. Situated at the north-eastern tip of the South Island, this dry, sunny region produces around three-quarters of all New Zealand wine. It is particularly famous for its pungent, zesty Sauvignon Blanc - widely considered by critics to be the best Sauvignon currently produced anywhere on the planet. Commercial-scale viticulture began in Marlborough the 1970s – it conquered the world within 25 years!

Pinot Noir is the dominant red wine grape of Burgundy, now produced in wine regions all over the world, including western Germany, northern Italy, Chile, South Africa, Australia and, perhaps most notably, California, Oregon and New Zealand.

Stephen Wong "Light ruby. Floral, delicate nose with subtle aromas of pot-pourri, wild berry and rosehip. A light, crisp palate with crystalline, light-weight tangy flavours and a subtly savoury finish which rests on bony, chalky, fine tannins. Volnay-esque in its expression of lightness and clarity, like lace stained with cherry. Accessible now but it will unfurl and evolve within the context of its more contemplative, delicate style, at least in the mid-term."

Cameron Douglas MS "Ripe, pure, vibrant, varietal, complex and and new. Aromas of dark plums and cherries, layers of savoury spices, barrel spices and a mix of red flowers including roses. A lovely bouquet with a youthful energy and power. On the palate an equally vibrant wine touches first with tannins and acidity making their presence known, then a core of dark red berry fruits and savoury baking spice qualities take over. Tannins are in abundance, are firm-ish and acidity all set the structure in place. A lovely wine." (2022 vintage)

Cameron Douglas MS "There’s no mistaking the purity of fruit at the center of the bouquet - red cherries and ripe sweet plum, some raspberry and baked strawberry suggestions. Oak layers in some complexity and spice and the varietal signature is enhanced by a fine layer of mineral silty soil scents. Taut and youthful on the palate with a core of red berry fruit flavours, plums and tart strawberry. Tannins and acidity accentuate the youthful mouthfeel adding foundation structure and power." (2020 vintage)

Wine Enthusiast "The Crimson Range supports founder Clive Paton's efforts to replant and preserve native New Zealand trees. This vintage is a bit austere, leading with damp earth and mushrooms, but with aeration it opens to more plump raspberry, cherry, sap and spice characters. Tannins are savory and chiseled, made more angular by edgy acidity. There's plenty of fruit, too." (2020 vintage)

Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Made from mainly younger pinot noir vines but with extra concentration from a low-yielding vintage. Classy wine with dark cherry, plum, violet and dried herb flavours. A delicious texture and surprising length. Good value at this price." (2021 vintage)

The Real Review, Bob Campbell "Ata Rangi's second-label pinot noir made from grapes grown on younger vines than their flagship wine. It is sporting a new label showing a stylised Pohutukawa flower. Seamless, stylish pinot noir with savoury, dried herb, spice, cherry, floral and violet flavours. Deliciously approachable now but should develop well, at least in the medium-term." (2019 vintage)

The Real Review, Huon Hooke "Medium to deep red colour with a rim of purple and a foresty bouquet that suggests substantial whole-bunch fermentation. The wine is intense and quite structured, with quite a full-body, the tannins imparting a degree of bitterness to the finish and follow-through. The bouquet is charming and captivating, the palate should follow on if given a little more time. It already drinks well with food." (2019 vintage)

Cameron Douglas MS "Youthful, vibrant, fresh and lively bouquet with aromas of cherries and plums, dried herbs and silty soil layers, a fine lees and wood spice aromatics. Overall - vibrant, youthful and high energy. On the palate - dry, youthful, plenty of texture from tannin and acidity, bright young red fruit flavours contrast the texture and a vibrant youthful mouthfeel overall." (2019 vintage)

James Suckling "A very attractive Crimson with bright red cherries and perfume, as well as a sappy edge that adds further interest. Plenty of spice, too. The palate has a very supple and elegant feel with a plush and fresh core of spicy red cherries and plums. Bright, vibrant and gently creamy. " (2019 vintage)

Matthew Jukes "This stunning estate makes the most revered Pinot Noir in New Zealand"

Lisa Perrotti-Brown eRobertParker.com "Their Pinots have always been great and yet, even in a world where the Pinot benchmark gets higher every year, Ata Rangi is better than ever."

Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with a big reputation for serious Pinot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, his wife Phyll and his sister Alison.

Clive planted his first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area.

Crimson is a wine which was inspired by a love of New Zealand’s native ‘Christmas Trees’ the rata and pohutukawa trees. Sales of this wine support Project Crimson, a charitable conservation trust which plants and protects these trees. The Pinot Noir grapes for Crimson are produced from 10-20 year old Martinborough vines in Lismore, Waiora and Walnut Ridge blocks. The grapes were hand picked and 100% destemmed, keeping as much whole berry fruit as possible.

After four years of transition, Ata Rangi were certified in 2014 as fully organic.

Everything is in place, but it wants for just a little more edge." Handcrafted micro-winery
