Most Admired Wine Brand in Africa & the Middle East - Drink’s International 2020
#32 on the 'Most Admired Wine Brands in the World
International Winemaker of the Year in 2008, 2015 and 2017 - International Wine and Spirit Competition

A blend of 37% Pinotage, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot,

James Suckling "Plums, dark cherries, bay leaves, dried flowers, raw mushrooms and baking spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Flavorful, savory finish."

Decanter "Such a slinky, silky and deliciously balanced blend. It’s magnificent with a roast and works superbly with turkey and all the trimmings too thanks to its graceful intensity."

Robert Parker "...begins with notions of smoke, dried herbs and a dark-fruited essence. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is clean and balanced and offers elements of dried tobacco, black plum skin and dusty potpourri before concluding with a lifted and subtly spiced finish."

Neal Martin "...has vibrant crimson hues, with complimenting aromas of raspberries, dark cherries, plums, cinnamon and cloves. Supple, elegant tannins and a fresh seam of acidity are beautifully balanced with a vibrant explosion of fruit on the palate. Juicy flavours of red and black fruits, and a hint of chocolate, dominate the lengthy finish"

Vinous "a clean, precise bouquet of blackberry and perfumed rose petal aromas. The well-balanced palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a briny finish. Fine."

Vinous " This is a supremely well made Cape Blend from Kanonkop...The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins and crisp acidity that lends an appealing edginess..... the fruit comes through toward the finish and leaves residues of black pepper and tangy seaweed on the finish.....The bouquet offers a mixture of red and black plums, a touch of white pepper and a light Provencal herb note. It opens nicely with aeration.” (2018 vintage)

Tim Atkin MW "You can only applaud a winery – especially one as famous as Kanonkop – that makes 1.7 million bottles of a wine of this quality. Dominated by Pinotage, with the remaining 63% made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it’s a floral, textured, well-structured cuvée with notes of mint and dried herbs and a core of cassis and raspberry fruit." (2018 vintage)

Robert Parker "...begins with juicy red and black fruit essence over dusty purple flowers with plum skin, blackberry and hints of spice on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is open and expressive in the mouth with a balanced structure and fruit that is more red-berried, with plum and cherry essence. Ending with a lingering finish and lifting tannins, this represents a delightful wine that delivers well for the price." (2018 vintage)

Decanter "Quaffable, with sweet dark fruit and a hint of oak."

Wine Spectator "..a terrific introduction to the winery’s reds.....a pure and juicy wine with elegance that’s perfect for turkey. It also has enough structure to be paired with heavier side dishes. A pure, well-crafted red, with notes of stewed plum and mulberry accented by notes of vanilla and cardamom. Shows both density and elegance, with a slightly chewy tannic structure on the well-defined finish." (2018 vintage)

Kanonkop Estate is one of the most recognisable names in South African wine, and Drink’s International 2020 Most Admired Wine Brand in Africa & the Middle East and listed at #32 on the 'Most Admired Wine Brands in the World'. The estate is located in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa and has been owned by the same family for four generations. Kanonkop wines are classically-styled, bold and hearty, emboding a traditional wine style that has been maintained by award-winning winemaker Abrie Beeslaar, who won the International Wine and Spirit Competition’s award for International Winemaker of the Year in 2008, 2015 and 2017. Kanonkop Estate is the only winery to have won the prestigious trophy for Best Blended Red at the International Wine & Spirits Competition four times. The winery is famous for being one of the first producers to grow and vinify Pinotage, South Africa's signature grape variety. Kanonkop Estate wines are often referred to as South Africa's 'First Growth'. The estate makes red wines from the classic Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Stellenbosch is perhaps the most famous wine-producing region in South Africa. The town, in Western Cape's Coastal Region, is steeped in history and is home to the country’s best-known wine estates. Cabernet Sauvignon is the region's most widely planted grape variety, and is often combined with Merlot to create Bordeaux Blend wines.

Pinotage is South Africa's signature grape variety. It is grown almost exclusively there, making everything from low-quality table wines to rich, concentrated wines with flavors of black and red fruits, spice, leather and chocolate. The variety, a crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, was first bred by scientist Abraham Perold in 1925. The name Pinotage is a portmanteau of its two parents, as Cinsaut was once known in South Africa as Hermitage.
