Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion "From older vines off the Mort Block. This is tightly packed riesling, concentrated and super, extra lemon-limey, a racy number with high refreshment factor and stacks of get up and go. Good perfume that delivers all that citrus but quite a lot of florals in jasmine and lemon blossom too. A little chalkiness to the texture is also a treat. Finishes long, fine and squeaky, with near eye-watering briskness of minerally acidity. Hits the spot."

James Suckling "Very aromatic, with a slew of citrus-blossom, hibiscus and jasmine aromas alongside the tart mango and lime fruit. Juicy and generous on the medium-bodied palate, with a touch of blood-orange character at the long, crisp finish." (2022 vintage)

Stuart Knox, The Real Review "Uber-pale lemon and lime tints in the glass. Lime tart aromatics and it carries similar flavours through the palate. A hint of saline minerality adds character and it accentuates the taut acid line that drives it long to a pleasing fuzz pithy finish." (2022 vintage)

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate "This 2022 Mort's Block Riesling is very good. 2022 was a superstar year for the Clare Valley, and it is evident here in the cool concentration and fine, pithy minerality of the wine in the mouth. Long and spooling, this is good." (2022 vintage)

Wine Enthusiast "Honey-flecked lemon, lime blossom, beeswax and a hint of kerosene open this transparent Riesling. There's lovely, tongue-tingling, racy acidity, concentrated orange and lime flavors, length and poise. Deftly demonstrates the excellent value-for-money Clare Riesling provides." (2022 vintage)

James Suckling "Bright, fresh lime and apple, as well as fresh white florals. This is very pure. The palate has a very fine, fresh feel with intense lime and apple flavors on offer. Fine, talc and chalky finish." (2021 vintage)

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate "2021 was an excellent vintage in Clare, and it gave the wines, the Rieslings in particular, a firm rod of acidity. While the wines always have great acidity, it can be disguised or enveloped in the generous, sometimes billowing fruit. In this 2021 Mort's Block Riesling, all of that is restrained and taut, the acidity a javelin through the heart of the fruit. Some pithy phenolics through the finish tighten things up. Nicely done." (2021 vintage)

Wine Enthusiast "Quite young and reductive at the moment, with some CO2 and a flinty pungency to start, there's bright citrus fruit waiting to shine just beneath the surface. Waxy lemon-lime, fresh honeycomb and a bit of ginger spice march from nose to palate with a persistent line of crisp acidity and textural interest. Dry, bracing and balanced, with length and ageability." (2021 vintage)

100% Riesling

Kilikanoon is recognized as one of Australia's leading wineries. From humble beginnings in 1997 with just 25,000 bottles produced from the first vintage, Kilikanoon has grown significantly, now exporting to over 25 countries. Mort Mitchell is Kilikanoon’s godfather and father to founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell. Mort planted the vines which bear his name in the Clare Valley sub-region of Watervale in the early 1970’s. He carefully tended to these vines for over 40 years and it is his efforts that allow Kilikanoon to produce such a fantastic example of Clare Valley Riesling year on year.

The 2002 Clare Valley Wine Show chaired by prominent Australian wine writer and judge, Huon Hooke, propelled Kilikanoon into the spotlight, winning 6 of the 7 trophies awarded.

Watervale is a sub-region of the Clare Valley renowned for its dry white wines from the Riesling grape variety.

The town of Watervale lies just off the Riesling Trail about 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of Clare, and is surrounded by wineries including Annie's Lane, Crabtree and Shut the Gate. Many wineries from elsewhere in the Clare Valley also make wines from the vineyards here.

The Clare Valley as a whole lies at higher altitudes than the Barossa Valley; the regional climate has more extreme variations and acidity adjustments are not required as often. But the Clare Valley region can be divided into many subtly different microclimates, Watervale being one of them.
