Alan Oswald, Winemaker "Our 2018 Super Nanny is truly reflective of the 2018 growing season, where Intensely hot and dry conditions necessitated an early harvest. Maintaining vibrancy and balance in the wine was a key consideration, and the decision to pick early is clearly visible in this wine. Bright red berry fruits lifted florals and vibrant acidity complement the more traditional Super Nanny characters of dark plum, cherries and toasted spices. Whilst bright and lively on the palate, there is also a pleasingly dense core of black and blueberry fruits, tightly bound by a fine coil of silky tannin ensuring the persistence of flavour long after the last sip."

Nanny Goat Pinot Noir comes from the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. As with most vineyards, there is usually a small parcel or two of outstanding quality fruit that outshines the rest.

1 x Te Mata Bullnose Syrah 2018 ~ Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

96/100 Huon Hooke
96/100 Cameron Douglas
95/100 The Wine Front

Te Mata Estate is regarded as one of New Zealand’s most important wine producers.

Sam Kim "The palate is concentrated, focused and delightfully flowing with outstanding depth and intensity, while remaining elegant and poised, leading to an extremely long expansive finish. Harmonious, seamless and flawlessly precise. Combining exquisite refinement and undeniable power, this latest offering is another stunning beauty under this iconic label...The gorgeously perfumed bouquet shows Black Doris plum, sweet raspberry, violet, olive and toasted almond characters with a whiff of fragrant spice. "

Jancis Robinson "Confected black fruit, finely layered tannins, a touch of bacon and smoke on the finish. Dry, savoury, meaty persistence."

Cameron Douglas "A great bouquet, the fine nose of Syrah with white and black peppercorn, roses and lavender, a core of red currants, black cherry and Doris plum, some sweet olive and new leather. Firm, youthful and dry with an abundance of tannins and acidity."

Decanter "A very modern take on Syrah which turns up the chocolate and cappuccino characters to create a rich and silky wine. There’s dark cherry and ripe raspberry fruit to balance the roasted coffee tannins with an acid spike. Extended skin contact and a warmish fermentation have given this depth and elegance."

Gary Walsh "Ras el hanout (راس الحانوت) is a spice mix that means ‘head of the shop’, and maybe we have a bull in a shop here, such is the level of exotic spice and perfume pumping out of the glass. In with that, some lavender and vanilla, cherry and redcurrant, a smattering of green herb too. It’s light to medium-bodied, fine emery tannin, juicy raspberry acidity and flavour, inner-mouth perfume and spiced wood aromatic, and a dusty white pepper texture and taste on a cool long finish. Nice and ‘minerally’ too. You have to like them spicy and lithe, and if so, this’ll be close to the top of the shop for you."

Huon Hooke "...a pronounced spicy, peppery aroma, the palate sweet rich and deep in very elegant, classy fruit flavour. The tannins are ample and refined, balanced and the wine is overall delicious. Black pepper, subtle cloves and other spices. It has a core of fruit sweetness that is utterly delicious."

World of Fine Wine 'Getting to know a legend' "A visit to one of the world’s greatest fine-wine estates should be an integral part of any tour of New Zealand. On the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island is the independently owned, family-run, Te Mata Estate. Owners and staff still work on vineyards that began growing Cabernet, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir back in the 1890s, making it the country’s oldest wine estate. Since 1905, this winery has been winning gold medals globally, which led to these sites becoming the country’s first to be protected by law due to their viticultural history...Te Mata Estate wines are currently available in 45 countries and have been presented at some of the world’s top tables— including to President Barrack Obama, President Xi Jinping, and Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee."

Raymond Chan "Te Mata Estate was the standard by which every other wine producer could be judged against, as the full range of styles has always been impeccable. In the earlier days, Hawke’s Bay was the scene of New Zealand’s quality wine, so it was very apt to have Te Mata Estate as the point of reference. Even when other regions developed, and Marlborough grew larger, and other varietals such as Pinot Noir became important, one could understand the state of the New Zealand wine industry by how Te Mata Estate behaved or reacted to influences, whether internal or international."

Te Mata Estate is regarded as one of New Zealand’s most important wine producers. It is New Zealand's oldest winery, oldest wine estate and has the oldest winery cellars in the country - in continuous operation since 1895. New Zealand's Great Red Wine ~ Raymond Chan

Te Mata Estate is regarded as one of New Zealand’s most important wine producers

Coleraine is Te Mata's most acclaimed wine and is often regarded as New Zealand's best red wine

World of Fine Wines "Regarded as New Zealand’s most famous red wine...Te Mata Estate’s flagship wine, Coleraine, which isn’t released every year, is keenly reflective of the vintage in which it is made. When it is released, it immediately becomes a collector’s item, with the last four vintages selling out from the winery within weeks." ....In 2018 35-year verticals of Te Mata Estate Coleraine achieved the highest-ever auction price paid for any collection of New Zealand wine.

The Winefront "Magnificent.....Luxuriate in the quality on offer here, now, and for decades to come. Black fruit, raspberry coulis, sweet rolling tobacco, hazelnut, roses, nutmeg and paprika. It’s tightly packed, with a distinct ‘mineral’ feel to the acidity, concentrated but light on its feet. Dark chocolate and subtle leafy fragrance, long and powerful through the finish, with a deliciously adult walnut burr to close."

Huon Hooke "Te Mata Estate Coleraine is one of the greatest New Zealand wines, with a 37-year span of vintages, and, most surprisingly it was a great wine from the very first vintage. Very deep, concentrated, bright purple/red colour. The bouquet is exquisite with a multitude of black fruits, blueberry, cassis, violet and cedar aromas, and much more besides. The detail is outstanding, as is the intensity of the palate. It’s very concentrated and powerful, firmly-structured and has tremendous persistence. The tannins are firm and abundant and will help guarantee a long life, but they are ripe and accessible and the wine is already approachable"

Bob Campbell "This is classic Coleraine with cassis, cedar, floral, blueberry, a suggestion of wood smoke, anise and spicy oak flavours. Terrific depth and an exquisite balance between fruit sweetness and acid/tannin structure. It will be a long-distance runner."

The Winemaker "The 2018 is one of the 2-3 finest Coleraines we have released to date."

Tom Cannavan "...one of New Zealand's most loved and respected red wines, made in the best years at the Te Mata estate since 1982. Hand-harvested from the best blocks of old vines in the hillside vineyard opposite the winery in Havelock North, the wine saw extended maceration before spending 17 months in French oak barriques, 60% of which were new. It was bottled in December 2019. Slightly deeper in colour than 2017, a solid crimson, it has a truly lovely perfume, touches of violet and kirsch like the 2017, a little bit of briar and olive, but more overtly ripe and plush fruit suggesting blackcurrant and cherry with less of the currant leaf note of 2017. The slightly greater ripeness is apparent. Substantial and creamy on the palate, a flood of fruit is sweet and ripe, fleshy with plum and bramble, but the impression of bittersweetness comes with the endive and liquorice bite of the tannins, a touch of roasted chestnut, and fresh, vital acidity."

Cabernet sauvignon (52%), merlot (33%) and cabernet franc (15%).

Ranked #4 of New Zealand Chardonnays - Wine 360
5 Star Rated by Bob Campbell

Cam Douglas MS "A full-bodied, nutty, rich and powerful wine with a core of roasted stone fruit and toasty cashew-nut oak flavours, fine textured tannins and a brazil-nut butter texture. Baked peaches and lemon, nectarine skin and grapefruit. There’s vanilla and nut, warming alcohol and medium+ acidity. A wine that ticks all the boxes of weight and intensity, richness and power, flavour and deliciousness. "

The Real Review, Bob Campbell "Big, rich and creamy chardonnay with layers of tree fruit, citrus fruit, mineral and oak flavours. Complex, satisfying and generously proportioned, with a solid backbone of tangy acid and peppery tannins. An heroic chardonnay with development potential."

James Suckling "A crisp and very lively chardonnay with sliced lemon, green apple and a hint of nougat. Medium-bodied with excellent energy and a minerally finish. Salty."

The Real Review, Stephen Wong "Tight, flinty sulfide/smoke nose, young, closed. Very high-toned citrus and herb notes - in the reductive, mineral style. Concentrated fruit, sulfites dominating at present, will this integrate over time? Very modern style, quite lean. Just lacking the fruit weight and depth to stand up the level of reduction here; still very good, but shy of great"

The Real Review, Bob Campbell "Light, slightly phenolic (in a good way) with grapefruit, sizzled butter, and oyster shell flavours. A bit simple at first but opened up as it sat in the glass."

The Real Review, Bob Campbell "Rich, complex chardonnay with grapefruit, nectarine, green apple, mint and a saline-mineral character.A lively, high-energy wine that promises to age very well indeed." (2019 vintage)

Cam Douglas MS "A rich and captivating bouquet with aromas of vanilla and roasted peach, baked apple and cashew nut, sour cream and burnt butter, nectarine and baking spice. There's no mistaking the power, the oak and the variety. Full-bodied and creamy textured on the palate with stone fruit and grapefruit flavours, vanilla and rw sugar with baking spice and smoke flavours of oak, fine tannins and mediumacidity. This is a big wine, but very well made, quite serious , rich, bold, nutty and ready." (2019 vintage)

Bob Campbell "Rich, weighty, creamy-textured chardonnay with toast, sizzled butter, peach, melon, spice and citrus flavours (among others). A satisfyingly complex and textural wine that demonstrate impressive viticultural and winemaking skills" (2018 vintage)

James Suckling "Sweetly floral and offering a wealth of fresh melon and peaches with orange blossom, too. The palate has a rich, fleshy and quite succulent feel with plenty of flavor, following the peach and lemon vein. Grilled nuts to close." (2018 vintage)

Cam Douglas "There’s no mistaking the power and impact from this wine with aromas of cashew nut and whipped cream, roasted peaches and vanilla, smoky wood and brown baking spices. On the palate - full-bodied with a creamy texture, fruity reflecting the aromas from the bouquet. With the presented level of bottle-development, this wine is ready to enjoy from today and through 2021." (2018 vintage)

Jancis Robinson "...this is proper premier cru stuff, with all the sophistication and minerality (whatever that might be!) of great Chardonnay." (2018 vintage)

The Winemaker "The palate is concentrated with waves of harmonious flavours of ripe citrus, flinty lees characters and nutty, toasty flavours. The acidity is well-matched with the weight and concentration of the wine, rich enough not to be distracted by any malo or heavy lees work."

Raymond Chan "The nose is softly full and voluminous with generous and up-front aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits along with nuances of citrus and tropical fruit melded with well-packed complexing aromas of gunflint reduction, creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak. This has depth and power. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and mouth-filling flavours of ripe yellow stonefruits with hints of citrus and tropical fruit, integrated with a fine, complex amalgam of nutty oak and flinty reduction. There is a suggestion of richness and creaminess from the barrel-ferment, which is balanced by bright, refreshing acidity. The wine carries with power and drives along a fine-textured line, leading to a long and sustained finish. This is a rich, mouth-filling and concentrated, complex Chardonnay with stonefruit, nutty oak and gunflint interest on a powerful palate. Match with poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 5-6+ years. A selection of the finest barrels. Fruit from the volcanic hillsides WBP, and fruit from the sheltered hillsides foot-stomped, then fully indigenous yeast barrel-fermented with full solids to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 36% new French oak puncheons.." (2017 vintage)

Robert Parker The Wine Advocate "Man O’ War is without a doubt one of New Zealand’s greatest wineries in the making and one to watch."

Jancis Robinson “Waiheke Island, home to one of the country’s best Syrah producers Man O’ War…New Zealand is second only to the Rhône in the consistency of quality it achieves.”

Raymond Chan "Man O’ War is arguably Waiheke Island’s most significant wine producer.."

Man O'War Vineyards is a leading New Zealand wine producer on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf. It is known for its consistently high-quality range of wines made from grape varieties like Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Bob Campbell, The Real Review "Elegant, aromatic pinot noir with bright, high energy floral, violet, cherry, fresh herb, star anise and restrained spicy oak supported by fine tannins and juicy acidity. An attractively fragrant, supple wine that's a little lighter than usual but gives a nod in the direction of Burgundy and shows promising ageing potential. "

The Wine Advocate "The long-serving, dedicated team behind Ata Rangi just go from strength to strength. Their Pinots have always been great and yet, even in a world where the Pinot benchmark gets higher very year, Ata Rangi is better than ever."

The Wine Front "Ata Rangi is probably my favourite ‘New World’ Pinot producer."

Matthew Jukes "This stunning estate makes the most revered Pinot Noir in New Zealand."

Decanter "Ata Rangi is the crowned king of New Zealand Pinot Noir. It has been making stunning wine for a long time; experience, vine age and a great vineyard site giving a competitive edge."

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit "Splendidly perfumed and immensely complex, the wine shows sweet cherry, thyme, floral, cedar and earthy mushroom characters on the nose. The palate displays outstanding concentration and persistency, together with refined texture and flowing mouthfeel, finishing wonderfully long and seductive. It’s multi-layered and perfectly proportioned with a stunning line and length. At its best: 2022 to 2033."

Nick Stock "Aromas of red cherries, cedar, dry brown spices, forest berries and wood, as well as rose-like perfume. It opens and aromatically enriches with some air. The palate has all the trademark layering of smooth tannins and a smoothly ripe ball of fresh red cherries. Assertive drive to the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit "A symphonic offering, once again, exhibiting red/black cherry, mushroom, mixed spice and vanilla characters with nuances of black tea and floral on the nose. The palate is superbly structured and seductively expressed, offering lovely fruit purity together with sensual mouthfeel and savoury undertones. Perfectly proportioned and impeccably balanced, this is another super-star in the making." (2016 Vintage)

Bob Campbell MW "Very seductive pinot noir combining a sensual, silken texture with layers of complex fruit and savoury flavours. The wine has structure but it is deeply buried within a core of sweet fruit. Dark-fleshed plum, violet, cherry, spice and very subtle fresh herbs are among the more obvious flavours in this supremely complex wine. Outstanding!" (2016 Vintage)

Raymond Chan "Full, very dark, deep, ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly concentrated with a deep, dense core of well-ripened dark-red cherry and berry fruit seamlessly melded with subtle dark-red florals, dark herbs, spices and oak elements, unfolding black-berried fruits. The aromatics are exceptionally harmonious and integrated, and the nose is quite complete. Medium-full bodied, the palate features rich and succulently sweet flavours of dark-red cherry and berry fruits along with black fruits lifted by dark-red and violet florals and subtle notes of dark herbs. Suggestions of spice and oak emerge. The flavours are beautifully precise, detailed and harmoniously balanced, and the mouthfeel very supple and fine-textured with flowery tannin extraction. The acidity is integrated and provides vitality for the refined core and line. The wine flows seamlessly to a long and sustained, complete finish. This is a beautifully rich and multi-layered and detailed Pinot Noir of precision and harmony, with succulently sweet fruit and refined structure, enabling accessibility, and showing completeness." (2016 Vintage)

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front "Rosy, dark cherry, ripe and fleshy, a slip of vanilla oak. Medium-bodied, a smattering of orange peel and blood orange juice, silky tannin, gentle warmth, and a bold and sappy finish. Personality plus." (2016 Vintage)

Dave Brookes, The Adelaide Review "Marking 30 years since Ata Rangi’s first wine, the 2015 Pinot Noir is an important release from the New Zealand winery that produces beautifully composed, seductive wines. Found Clive Paton and winemaker Helen Masters weave their magic here. Deeply coloured with just a flash of purple, the 2015 Pinot Noir is a beautifully fragrant wine. Appealing violet and jasmine notes provide a high-toned melody above the dark cherry baseline with hints of macerated strawberry, sous Bois, vanilla bean, game meats and gentle, spicy oak. This is a calm wine, very comfortable in its own skin. Nothing is protruding or vying for attention. Everything is in balance. The characters from the nose transpose neatly over onto the palate. There’s precision here, with a finely-honed line driven by a seam of acidity and silky tannins. It finishes long, pure and multi-layered in its complexity. Delicious" (2015 Vintage)

Nick Stock "A complex and giving wine that was born of a low-yielding, dry vintage, this is testament to the character of these older vines. The nose carries a deep-set spiciness in the cinnamon and baking spice spectrum with plenty of ripe red plum, some red cherry and spiced plum pastry, too. There are a greater savoury and spice emphasis this vintage. The palate has plenty of tannins, gently chewy and assertive, and it carries a core of tangy cherry pip-flavored fruit and nutty ripeness through the finish." (2015 Vintage)

Robert Parker "When I asked winemakers to name NZ’s greatest producers, one name kept coming up: Ata Rangi. Despite its success, which includes the flagship Pinot Noir being conferred with a Grand Cru honour, Ata Rangi remains family-owned and managed. Talented winemaker Helen Masters crafts the range of exceptional wines, allowing Clive more time for his extensive conservation efforts throughout New Zealand." After four years of transition, Ata Rangi was certified in 2014 as fully organic.

Ata Rangi no longer enters wine competitions, but the accolades continue. In 2010 Ata Rangi and Felton Road were both awarded the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or ‘Grand Cru of New Zealand’ by their peers. That’s a serious pat on the back.

Coleraine is Te Mata's most acclaimed wine and is often regarded as New Zealand's best red wine.
