Bob Campbell MW "Rich, intense and classy syrah with plum, dark berry, five-spice, chocolate-mocha and nutty oak flavours. A robust yet stylish wine, with a solid backbone of ripe tannins suggesting good cellaring potential."
CamDouglas MS "A developing bouquet showcasing aromas of fresh and dried red currants, raspberry and tart plums. A violet and leather quality alongside some toatsy barrel spices, anise and clove layer in complexity and depth. Delicious on the palate, reflrecting all the bouquet has to offer, firm tannins and a backbone of acidity. The dry finish highlights the tannins, but the fruit flavours and violet anise combination also leave an impression on the finish. "
Jancis Robinson "Tank sample.Meaty and peppery with rich plummy fruit on the nose. Relatively light in body. Delicately structured with a long, spicy, leathery finish. Refined and sophisticated with moderate length and a lovely savoury tone. It's so non-fruit centric! Lots of goût de terroir."
Rebecca Gibb MW "...consistently encapsulates everything that is good in New Zealand Syrah - dark fruit, black pepper spice and smoked-meat flavours wrapped up in an elegant, medium-weight parcel with bags of freshness on the finish."
Bob Campbell "Deep, dense Syrah that's jam-packed with many flavours including plum, dark berry, black pepper, a suggestion of violet, liquorice, leather and tar characters." (2017 vintage)
Cam Douglas "Immediately recognisable and seductive bouquet with aromas of blackberry and raspberry, dark plums and black pepper. The aromas expand to include clove and cocoa, toasty wood and dark dry rocky soil impressions. On the palate - dry, weighty, firm textures from tannins, warming alcohol and an abundance of acidity. Fruit flavours reflect the palate led by dark raspberry and black cherry. Persistent and engaging throughout the palate, well made and ready." (2017 vintage)
James Suckling "This has a very rich, ripe-blackberry and dark-plum nose with plenty of dark, toasted spice and black pepper. The palate is concentrated and smooth-honed with dense, fine tannins that carry a very plush, juicy and succulently long finish. Impressive purity here." (2017 vintage)
Falstaff "Dark ruby, purple reflections, faint brightening on the rim. Subtle tobacco on the nose with black cherry, red peppercorn, a hint of vanilla and cardamom in the background. Elegant, juicy palate, fine red berry fruit, pleasant, well integrated tannins and mineral with a lively structure. Delicately salty and already well developed." (2017 vintage)
Tom Cannavan "Two years older than the previous wine and a softer colour, and there's a meatiness here, briarwood, game and a little smokiness, the fruit still in the red spectrum and there's cedar too in a very classic style. In the mouth there's great sweetness and ripeness, a fleshiness to the fruit, plum flesh and a bite of cherry pits and a little stemmy wood note that fits really nicely in the picture. Rhône-ish in style for me and very good." (2017 vintage)
Wine Enthusiast "This Waiheke Island Syrah gives off a strong sulfuric, reductive aroma when first poured. But don't let that put you off. After a few minutes of swirling or decanting, it opens into something quite pretty and varietal. Juicy berry fruit mingles with bay leaf and more savory, earthy spice, with mineral and graphite brushstrokes. In the mouth, savory, granular tannins provide support to the fleshy fruit, and a roasted meat flavor pops up. There's a slightly bitter oak note to the finish, but overall this is a solid regional and varietal expression. " (2017 vintage)
Robert Parker "...continues this cuvée's run of successes. Violets, peppery spices and mulberry notes appear on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate adds flavors of raspberries, espresso and chocolate. Silky and immediately approachable, it doesn't have the richness or concentration of the best vintages." (2016 vintage)
Man O'War Vineyards is a leading New Zealand wine producer on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf. It is known for its consistently high-quality range of wines made from grape varieties like Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each small parcel of vines is carefully tended and harvested by hand, then vinified separately, fusing classic Old World techniques with innovative New World ideas.
Waiheke Island is a wine-producing region just 18km east of Auckland city. This hilly island is home to a healthy population of hippies and artists, as well as some of Auckland's most famous vineyards. Waiheke Island's specialty is elegant Bordeaux Blend wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but Syrah and Chardonnay are also important grape varieties planted here.
Syrah is a dark-skinned red wine grape. Its origins have been popularly debated, but its modern viticultural home is unquestionably the northern Rhône Valley of eastern France. In Australia, Syrah is the flagship variety and has developed such a distinct personality that it is essentially regarded as a distinct variety, is commonly known as Shiraz.

Te Mata Estate is regarded as one of New Zealand’s most important wine producers
Wine Enthusiast "This is an excellent bottling of Awatea, the younger brother of Te Mata's top red, Coleraine. From a long, warm growing season, this feels like a complete wine. Winter warming notes of plump plums, dark cherries and chocolate are complemented by a bounty of dried herbs, spices and graphite. The palate is similarly dense and structured but with elegance and balance. Tannins are powdery and fine, winding through dark, tangy fruit and herbs. Like many of Te Mata's wines, it has an old school Bordeaux vibe that will appeal more to some than to others. Christina Pickard"
Huon Hooke" Very deep, bold, bright purple/red colour leads into a superbly fragrant cabernet nose of violets, cassis, cedar and tobacco, while the palate is intense and bright, focused and elegant, with abundant fine tannins but also ready drinkabilty and superb balance. An excellent Awatea, with the structure to age and develop for many years. (48% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot, 15% cabernet franc)"
Robert Parker - "A blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Awatea Cabernets-Merlot is a bit leafy on the nose, with herbal, tobacco-tinged aromas accenting cassis and black cherries. It's medium to full-bodied and supple on the palate, finishing long, silky and mouthwatering."
Gary Walsh '...Wonderful wine. So adult, so poised and sure footed...... [Te Mata's] Coleraine most often is a fair leap ahead of Awatea, but this year they almost pack into the same scrum with equal weight. Black fruit, tobacco, dried flower perfume, cocoa with a sprinkle of baking spice. Its proudly medium-bodied, light but lithe and well-knit. Mineral feel and lead pencil savoury stuff, a little redcurrant and cool acidity, firm and dry tannin, dried herb and delightful clarity mouth-perfume, sure length and mocha in the after taste."" (2017 Vintage)
Wine Enthusiast ""Te Mata's Awatea red blend costs less than half the price of the Coleraine and yet is cut from a very similar cloth. With a little less Cabernet Sauvignon and more Merlot than the latter, along with a touch of Cabernet Franc, it's more red fruited on the nose, weaving between crushed flower petals, herbal tonic, vanilla and graphite nuances. There's a softness here that's apparent on the palate too, where a silky texture belies the power of tight-grained herbaceous tannins. More immediately approachable than the Coleraine, it could nevertheless cellar until 2029."" (2017 Vintage)
Sam Kim ""Wonderfully composed and elegantly expressed with loads of delectable flavours, superbly structured by polished tannins. Delicious already with a potential to evolve gracefully......The wine offers splendid juicy fruit attack on the nose, showing dark plum and raspberry coulis characters with nuances of toasted almond, thyme and mixed spice. The palate is succulent and beautifully rounded, offering lovely flow and supple texture."" (2017 Vintage)
The Winemaker ""glimmers with bright raspberry, cherry and blackberry sparkling over mocha, cedar and spice.....Aromas of red and dark berry fruit, flashes of boysenberry and espresso on the palate, and a classical, super-fine, tannin structure running through to its long finish..."" (2017 Vintage)
Tom Cannavan "A touch more floral and lifted than the 2016, a bit of tapenade, racy cherry and raspberry, the same fruit complexity of red over dark, but super-juicy, a squirt of lemon juice and edgy, energetic flavours are crisp and fresh in the finish over black fruit." (2017 Vintage)
World of Fine Wine 'Getting to know a legend' ""A visit to one of the world’s greatest fine-wine estates should be an integral part of any tour of New Zealand. On the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island is the independently owned, family-run, Te Mata Estate. Owners and staff still work on vineyards that began growing Cabernet, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir back in the 1890s, making it the country’s oldest wine estate. Since 1905, this winery has been winning gold medals globally, which led to these sites becoming the country’s first to be protected by law due to their viticultural history. Te Mata Estate wines are currently available in 45 countries and have been presented at some of the world’s top tables— including to President Barrack Obama, President Xi Jinping, and Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee.""
Raymond Chan ""Te Mata Estate was the standard by which every other wine producer could be judged against, as the full range of styles has always been impeccable. In the earlier days, Hawke’s Bay was the scene of New Zealand’s quality wine, so it was very apt to have Te Mata Estate as the point of reference. Even when other regions developed, and Marlborough grew larger, and other varietals such as Pinot Noir became important, one could understand the state of the New Zealand wine industry by how Te Mata Estate behaved or reacted to influences, whether internal, or international.""
Te Mata Estate is regarded as one of New Zealand’s most important wine producers. It is New Zealand's oldest winery, oldest wine estate and has the oldest winery cellars in the country - in continuous operation since 1895. Coleraine is Te Mata's most acclaimed wine and is often regarded as New Zealand's best red wine.
Hawke's Bay is located on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island in and around the cities of Napier, Hastings and Havelock North. This historic region has New Zealand's second-largest wine industry (after Marlborough) and is highly regarded for its red Bordeaux Blend wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay are all planted widely across the region. Over the years, the region has won international acclaim for its very high-quality Bordeaux-style reds and full-bodied Chardonnays. Syrah, produced in a classic European style with strong black-pepper flavors, is another grape variety thought to have great potential here.
Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot wines are made from two of the world's most famous and most widely grown wine grapes. The pair form the foundation of many of the great wines of Bordeaux, where this classic blend (often dubbed ""Bordeaux Blend"") is thought to have originated. For centuries, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have been the quintessential Bordeaux wine grapes, but their fame and popularity have now taken them far beyond the banks of the Garonne, Dordogne and Gironde, to the furthest reaches of the wine world.
In California the blend is often labeled as Meritage – providing the producer meets the requirements of the Meritage Alliance. The Australian regions of Coonawarra, Margaret River and Yarra Valley are highly regarded for their unique expressions of the blend. A Bordeaux Blend is any combination of those grape varieties typically used to make the red wines of Bordeaux. Cabernet Sauvignon is widely accepted as a compulsory component of any Bordeaux Blend along with Merlot. In fact, the majority of Bordeaux Blend wines are often made exclusively from a blend of these two varieties. The remaining components are Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

A blend of cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot and cabernet sauvignon
Bob Campbell, Master of Wine "Bold, intense and youthful wine with strong cherry and berry, plum, dried fruits, spices, liquorice, dark chocolate and cedar flavours. Impressive now but with obvious cellaring potential."
Cameron Douglas "Flavours reflect the nose with the plums and dark berries, dark brown spices of oak and toasty wood, a vanilla and clove layer. Firm tannins, medium+ acidity, great balance and length. A classic Man O' War wine."
The Winemaker "The nose is a mixture of red and black fruit with pencil lead and sous-bois and a hint of incense. The palate is medium bodied with a ferrous grip that knots together with some excellent acidity. The flavours are more of the black fruit with some attractive herbal notes highlighting the Cabernet Franc."
Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier "Really decent bouquet of dark berries and plums, blackberries and cocoa, violet and wood smoke, marmite and toasty wood. On the palate - weighty, rich, fruity, woody and tasty. Flavours reflect the nose with the plums and dark berries, dark brown spices of oak and toasty wood, a vanilla and clove layer. Firm tannins, medium+ acidity, great balance and length. A classic M-O-War wine. Drink now and through 2023." (2017 Vintage)

Campbell Mattinson, The Real Review "Most of the grapes are from a 16-year-old hillside vineyard, with a small amount from five year-old vines on the flat. Quite a dense, rich and fleshy red with floral, violet, dark cherry and plum supported by gentle tannins. "
Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot "This Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is a good illustration of why Marlborough is a hugely underrated region for pinot. It’s got everything fans of this variety are searching for – perfumed aromas and sweet red fruits with a dark, earthy underbelly. Mid to deep cherry in colour, fruits are fleshy and generous. Cherry compote, damp earth and spice with toasty oak in play. The palate is then juicy and savoury – meaty, ground spice flavours over a bed of dark cherry fruits. It’s on the oaky side for pinot noir so best matched up with flavoursome dishes such as coq au vin."
QWine "Dark cherry, blackcurrants, mushrooms, even a hint of truffle get things on the move. A drying Pinot but there's a lighter side to it. Easy drinking, you'd kick back with this riverside watching the worries of the world float by. "
New Zealand Wine Rater "A very youthful, primary, un-evolved wine right no w, that's deep purple in hue, and somewhat subdued on the nose. As it opens with air time there's lots of chary oak, and blueberry fruit with a hint of cinnamon, and mace. Perhaps more Syrah-like than Pinot right now. Closed, primary with acid, and tannin dominating on the palate. Difficult to evaluate right now and begging for more time."
Campbell Mattinson, The Real Review "Well made, classical Marlborough pinot noir with typical red fruits, dried herb and subtle earthy-savoury flavours. A medium-bodied red, with a core of sweet fruit balanced against fine, drying tannins." (2017 vintage)
Decanter World Wine Awards "Juicy, open, floral, lifted and aromatic with great purity and hints of cherries, pencil shavings and oak-derived spice. Well-made with a persistent finish." (2017 vintage)
Marlborough based award-winning winery, Catalina Sounds is known for wines which harness the purity and vibrancy of Marlborough’s climate and landscape. The name Catalina Sounds evolved from the majestic Catalina flying boats that played a vital role across the South Pacific during and after World War II.
Marlborough is by far New Zealand's most important wine region. Situated at the north-eastern tip of the South Island, this dry, sunny region produces around three-quarters of all New Zealand wine. It is particularly famous for its pungent, zesty Sauvignon Blanc - widely considered by critics to be the best Sauvignon currently produced anywhere on the planet. Commercial-scale viticulture began in Marlborough the 1970s – it conquered the world within 25 years!
Pinot Noir is the dominant red wine grape of Burgundy, now produced in wine regions all over the world, including western Germany, northern Italy, Chile, South Africa, Australia and, perhaps most notably, California, Oregon and New Zealand.
The essence of Pinot Noir wine is its aroma of strawberry and cherry (fresh red cherries in lighter wines and stewed black cherries in weightier examples), underpinned in the most complex examples by hints of forest floor. Well-built Pinot Noirs, particularly from warmer harvests, also exhibit notes of leather and violets, sometimes approaching the flavor spectrum of Syrah.

"Organic Winery of the Year" - NZ Organic Wine Awards
Cameron Douglas MS "Distinctive, varietal, earthy and mineral with a line of new French oak spice and barrel toast. Aromas and flavours include a classic Otago savouriness with bracken and crumbled stone outlined by dark cherry and fresh raspberry flesh, plum and then baking spices of vanilla and clove. Tannins add structure and plenty of mouthfeel as does the acidity."
QWine "Organically farmed, there is plenty of depth but it's not weighty. Slick and silky, dark plums and dark cherries and flanked by pan juices, dancy delicate spices and some mushroom compost. An earthiness cruises through the mid-palate adding another level of interest before grippy, drying cocoa tannins ride out to a sustained finish. I'll have a glass thanks. No, make it two. Smart gear."
Michael Cooper "Concentrated richness and mushroom-like earthiness – juicy and succulent in the palate with cherry sweetness, a sultry savouriness, a touch of chocolate and fruit cake spices – very attractive and generous.
Bob Campbell MW "Luscious, concentrated pinot noir with a mix of floral, plum, dark cherry, cassis and spicy flavours. Dense, silken-textured wine with an unmistakable Central Otago signature. A heady wine that is delicious now but no rush." (2019 vintage)
Cameron Douglas MS "Tense, ripe, varietal and loaded with primary fruit and mineral energy. Bright red and dark cherry, raspberry and redcurrant. Baking spices of oak with a vanilla and cedar suggestion, a whisper of bacon then a quiet wood smoke moment. Quite powerful and youthful on the palate with fruit flavours that reflect the nose, an abundance of tannins and acidity add texture and energy. Lengthy finish with a primary, fruit centric power and contrasting wood and acid structure. Plenty of minerality this wine needs more cellar to really showcase its personality and pinosity." (2019 vintage)
James Suckling "Rich spiced-cherry and fresh red-plum nose with raspberries, violets and smoked-meat elements. The palate has vibrant plum flavor and a smooth sheen of fine, velvety tannin. Fresh and balanced." (2019 vintage)
Bob Campbell MW "Bright, youthful pinot noir with red rose, floral, dark cherry, anise, dried herb, thyme and spicy oak flavours supported by peppery tannins. An elegant wine with obvious cellaring potential" (2018 vintage)
Cam Douglas "Ruby and purple core with a purple rim, bright and shiny appearance. Very youthful bouquet with primary fruit aromas of plums and cherries, moderate intensity scents of oak, fleshy, young, savoury, pretty and inviting. On the palate - Dry, fresh, savoury and textured with a mix of fine to firm tannins, plenty of acidity and a core of fruit. All the raw energy of this wine is on show and needs time to settle in more and begin to harmonise - this is best completed in a cool dark cellar. This wine is also fresh, lively, packed with pinosity and charm and will reward those who decant for service or better still age a little longer with best drinking from later in 2021 through 2026." (2018 vintage)
Decanter Magazine "Highly Commended .......draws you back to the glass again and again. A fine texture and freshness" (2016 vintage)
Bob Campbell MW "A well-proportioned pinot noir.........firmly structured pinot noir with plum, dark cherry and a savoury, earthy, stemmy influence. " (2016 vintage)
Stephen Tanzer "This highly aromatic Pinot Noir finishes with sophisticated tannins and lovely length and grip......From very old gravelly glacial deposits, with little topsoil; vinified with wild yeasts and 10% whole clusters: Fresh medium red. Sappy aromas of wild raspberry, cherry, pepper and menthol. Juicy, dry and youthfully closed, with its intense red fruit flavors energized and supported by a firm mineral unpinning." (2016 vintage)
Wine Spectator "Lush and plush, with raspberry coulis, black cherry compote and red licorice flavors that are robust and juicy. Fresh earth, clove and sage notes linger on the finish. Drink now through 2026." (2016 vintage)
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate "Medium-bodied, it delivers a lot of red and blackberry character supported by soft tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing earthy.....Medium ruby-purple colored, the 2014 Pinot Noir gives a nose of black cherries, red currants and red plums with hints of underbrush and violets." (2014 vintage)
