Compass Box Peat Monster is a blended malt whisky using various single malt whiskies from different areas of Scotland. A typical blend will include single malts aged in refill hogsheads as follows: 40% "malt whisky from Laphroaig", 20% "malt whisky from Ledaig", 13% "malt whisky from Caol Ila", and 26% "malt whisky from Ardmore." The final 1% is a blend of Highland malts from Clynelish, Dailuaine, and Teaninich which finished for two years in Compass Box's new French oak toasted hybrid barrels.

Jonny McCormick - Whisky Advocate "A fantastically earthy whisky bristling with real, grubby peat: more blazing, bothy peat fire than a coastal campfire. Fleeting elements of fudge and smouldering, mellow cigar stubs. A smooth, creamy blend with lemon curd, vanilla sponge, mint, smoked prosciutto, and a dollop of malt. There’s wonderfully smoky, singeing heat at the back of the palate, though it feels like the Islay peat has been pegged back... A succulent and smoky finish to warm the soul."

Stephanie Moreno - Distiller "A Pavlovian reaction may occur when taking a whiff of the whisky. Bacon bits, toasted cereal, and peat smoke are followed by sweet tastes of honey, lemon and sea salt. Using only peated whiskies, but with different levels of peat smoke, doesn't create a super smoke bomb, but rather provides a layered and complex dram."

Whisky Wash "I really do enjoy the dram. It is very tasty. I would even go so far as to say that I think many who are on the fence regarding peat influence in their whiskies may be drawn over to the smoky side by this blend."

ScotchNoob "It is fascinating (to me, but I’m weird like that) to find that a 35% proportion of Laphroaig would take over the aroma and flavor profiles against a 64% proportion of Caol Ila. The final effect is a very successful blend, where Laphroaig takes center stage and is supported with the depth and fullness of Caol Ila. The best of both worlds, if you will, but you kind of have to already be a Laphroaig fan to enjoy those iodine notes."

The Whisky Jug "This is a whisky that’s good in the glass and great in a cocktail. It has a simplistic beauty that moves from fruit to candy to pastry to earthy to smoky to coastal to industrial to elegant profiles..... The Peat Monster is a tasty whisky and I hope more people continue to discover it."

Dr Whisky "Amazing balance from start to finish. Peat and iodine to fruit baskets then burning leaves or wood outdoors. Distinct compartments of flavour that harmonise masterfully, if all a bit too consonant, major thirds and fifths. Monstrous? Cookie monster, maybe."

Nose - Smoke, honey, fruit, butter, malt, cinnamon oil, plastic and vanilla with a bit of saline.

Palate - Honey, fruit, smoke, butter, graham, cinnamon oil, plastic, vanilla and a bit of cakey sweetness.

Finish - Long. Smoke, honey, butter, cinnamon and fruit.

Compass Box’s strong work ethic is what sets them apart as an independent bottler and blender like no other. Compass Box buys individual casks and focuses on creating a craftsman-like boutique product. None of their bottlings is chill-filtered, nor is any colouring added and are all married exclusively in American oak. This brings the characteristic sweetness to the whisky.
